Why is Serophene prescribed?

Serophene is typically considered a beginning therapy for patients experiencing ovulatory failure or dysfunction. Serophene works by stimulating the body to release follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), the hormones necessary for ovulation to occur.

Most important fact about Serophene

As with other fertility medications, the use of Serophene is associated with multiple births (e.g., twins, triplets). Do not use Serophene if you are already pregnant, as it may cause severe birth defects in your child, such as heart problems, Down syndrome, club foot, cleft palate, harelip, and webbed fingers/toes.

Prolonged use of Serophene may increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Serophene may cause you to have blurred vision and see spots. These symptoms may cause problems when driving a car or operating machinery.

Also, Serophene may cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (see "What side effects may occur?").

How should you take Serophene?

Serophene tablets should be taken only by mouth.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Serophene.

Side effects may include:
Abnormal uterine bleeding (such as spotting), blind spots, blurred vision, breast pain, double-vision, headache, light sensitivity, sensation of seeing light; stomach and lower-stomach discomfort/pain/bloating, vision problems

Symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome are:
Diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain and discomfort, vomiting, weight gain

Why should Serophene not be prescribed?

Do not take Serophene if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Also, do not use Serophene if you are pregnant, as it may cause harm to your unborn baby.

Special warnings about Serophene

Avoid hazardous activities such as driving a car or operating heavy machinery, as Serophene may cause blurry vision.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning therapy with Serophene. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Do not take Serophene if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This drug may cause severe birth defects in your child, and may pass into your breast milk.

Recommended dosage for Serophene

ADULTS

The usual dosage of Serophene begins low, at 50 milligrams daily (1 tablet) for 5 days. The dose should be increased to 100 milligrams for 5 days only in women who do not ovulate in response to the 50-milligram dose.
