Why is Niravam prescribed?

Niravam is used to treat anxiety disorder, panic disorder (with or without a fear of crowds or being in small places), and to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms.

Most important fact about Niravam

Niravam may cause dependence. If taken at certain dosages, dependence becomes more likely. Dependence on Niravam has a greater chance of occurrence if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse.

How should you take Niravam?

With clean, dry hands, place a Niravam tablet on your tongue. It will begin to dissolve within seconds. You may take it with or without water.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Niravam.

Side effects may include:
Drowsiness, fatigue, headache, impaired coordination, insomnia, irritability, lightheadedness, memory impairment

Why should Niravam not be prescribed?

Do not take Niravam if you have acute narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure), are taking a potent antifungal medication such as ketoconazole or itraconazole.

Special warnings about Niravam

Until you know how Niravam affects you, do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery. Do not change or stop taking your prescribed dose of Niravam without talking to your doctor first.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Niravam. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver problems, or if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Niravam

If Niravam is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Niravam with the following:

Alcohol
Anticonvulsants
Antihistamines
Desipramine
Fluoxetine
Imipramine
Oral contraceptives
Propoxyphene
Psychiatric medications

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is not recommended to take Niravam while pregnant. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor about the best therapy for you. Niravam may pass into breast milk.

Recommended dosage for Niravam

ADULTS

Anxiety Disorder
The initial dose is usually 0.25 to 0.5 milligrams (mg) taken 3 times a day. The dosage may be increased every 3 to 4 days to a maximum of 4 mg per day. Elderly patients may need to take a lower dose.

Panic Disorder
The initial dose is usually is 0.5 mg taken 3 times a day. The dosage may be increased every 3 to 4 days to a maximum of 4 mg per day.
