Why is Naltrexone prescribed?

Vivitrol is used to treat alcohol dependence.

Most important fact about Naltrexone

Vivitrol may cause damage to your liver. If you already have liver problems, tell your doctor before beginning treatment with Naltrexone.

Vivitrol also may cause depression and suicidal thoughts.

How should you take Naltrexone?

Vivitrol should be injected by your doctor into your buttocks, alternating sides with each injection.

If you miss a dose...
If you miss a dose of Vivitrol, see your doctor immediately for an injection.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Naltrexone.

Side effects may include:
Cramps, decreased appetite/anorexia, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, injection-site reaction (redness/swelling where you were injected), nausea, stomach pain, suicidal thoughts, vomiting

Why should Naltrexone not be prescribed?

If you are taking an opioid (such as heroin), dependent on opioids, are in opiate withdrawal, or have tested positive for opiates in your urine, do not begin treatment with Vivitrol.

Also, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Vivitrol, or if you have liver problems, you should not begin therapy.

Special warnings about Naltrexone

Vivitrol may make you feel dizzy. Do not drive a car, work with machines, or do other dangerous activities until you know how Vivitrol affects you.

Avoid nursing or becoming pregnant; if you become pregnant while on Vivitrol, contact your doctor immediately.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Vivitrol. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are dependent on an opiate. Vivitrol is not for the treatment of opiate-dependency.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Naltrexone

Vivitrol should not be taken if you are also on an opioid such as heroin. This may cause serious injury, coma, or death.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Do not take Vivitrol if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Vivitrol may cause harm to your unborn baby and may pass into breast-milk.
