Why is Enablex prescribed?

Enablex is a prescription medicine for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. Symptoms of OAB are having a strong need to go to the bathroom right away (urgency), leaking or wetting accidents (urinary incontinence), having to go to the bathroom too often (urinary frequency). This drug gives OAB symptom relief by targeting specific receptors on the bladder that cause involuntary muscle spasms. Enablex helps control the bladder muscle and helps restore control of urination.

Most important fact about Enablex

Enablex may cause urinary retention (difficulty urinating), gastric retention (delayed emptying of the stomach), and narrow angle glaucoma.

How should you take Enablex?

Enablex should be taken once a day with liquid, with or without food. This drug should not be crushed, split, or chewed.

If you miss a dose...
If you miss a dose of Enablex, begin taking it again the next day. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Store at room temperature.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Enablex.

Blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth, over-heated feeling

Why should Enablex not be prescribed?

Do not take Enablex if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Also, do not take Enablex if you are not able to empty your bladder (urinary retention), have delayed or slow emptying of your stomach (gastric retention), or you have an eye problem called uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.

Special warnings about Enablex

Avoid potentially hazardous activities (such as driving) when beginning treatment with Enablex. The drug may cause blurred vision.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Enablex. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have any stomach or intestinal problems, or problems with constipation; have trouble emptying your bladder or you have a weak urine stream; have an eye problem called narrow-angle glaucoma; have liver problems; or if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Enablex

If Enablex is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Enablex with the following:

Antifungal medicines
Clarithromycin
Flecainide
Ketoconazole
Itraconazole
Nefazadone
Nelfinavir
Ritonavir
Thioridazine
Tricyclic antidepressants

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of Enablex during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Talk with your doctor before taking Enablex if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
