PhRMA to Present Clinical Trial Exceptional Service Award

WASHINGTON,March 9, 2007 — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO Billy Tauzin announced the following Capitol Hill press conference:

On March 14, PhRMA will recognize clinical researchers who have made incredible contributions to the research and development of a revolutionary medicine that helps patients live longer, healthier lives.  PhRMA will announce and present the first-ever Clinical Trial Exceptional Service Award to the researchers who have advanced a scientific breakthrough that has helped improve the lives of patients worldwide.

 

This year’s Clinical Trial Exceptional Service Award will be presented to two physicians who were instrumental in the clinical trial process for Pfizer’s prescription drug Zyvox™.  This award also will be given to an 11-year-old patient who participated in the clinical trials that were critical to the development of this life-saving treatment. 

 

Zyvox™ is used to help treat infections caused by life-threatening bacteria as well as pneumonia. More than one million patients worldwide have been helped by Zyvox™ since it was approved in 2000 by the Food and Drug Administration. 

 

In addition, the annual PhRMA Discoverers Award bestowed to the pharmaceutical scientists who discovered Zyvox™ also will be present at this news conference.  The Discoverers Award researchers are Michael Barbachyn, Ph.D., Pfizer; Steven Brickner, Ph.D., Pfizer; and Douglas Hutchinson, Ph.D., formerly with Pfizer and now with Abbott. They will be honored at a dinner the following evening.
