Pharmaceutical Blog Chatter Continues About Dr. Steven Nissen’s Avandia Revelations, Most Bloggers Refute
NEWTOWN, PA, June 1, 2007 – This week, pharmaceutical bloggers spent much of their time refuting Dr. Steven Nissen’s Avandia study results. Also in the blogs is discussion of AstraZeneca squashing its pink cupcake plans. Christiane Truelove, editor of Med Ad News and R&D Directions, summarizes bloggers’ thoughts in this week’s edition of the PharmaBlogs: Week in Review e-newsletter.
David Phillips at the 10Q Detective blog criticizes the media for running Dr. Nissen’s Avandia study results without regard for statistical flaws and biases. The blog also worries that type 2 diabetes patients may stop taking Avandia without telling their doctors after reading these news stories. Furthermore, 10Q Detective questions Dr. Nissen’s relationship with Eli Lilly and Co., the marketers of Avandia competitor, Actos.
AstraZeneca released a memo to sales reps forbidding them from giving any flowers, food, or beverages as had been previously planned for the company’s Mothers United for Mammograms (MuMs) program. Bloggers speculate that the distribution of items to patients may have caused legal issues for AstraZeneca.
