Pharma Blogs This Week: Hot & Heavy Congressional Committee Hearings, DTC Study Shows No Effect on Pricing, and Another Pharma CFO Bites the Dust
NEWTOWN, Pa., June 8, 2007 – Pharmaceutical bloggers were busy this week discussing the congressional hearings on Avandia, the departure of AstraZeneca CFO Jon Symonds, Michael Moore’s appearance on Oprah, the Villanova University study claiming that DTC has no effect on drug pricing, and Dr. Peter Rost’s profile in this month’s Fortune magazine. Christiane Truelove, editor of Med Ad News and R&D Directions, summarizes the thoughts of popular industry bloggers on these topics.
Mark Senak of Eye on FDA predicts of the congressional hearings on Avandia, “… there is going to be a legislative effort to beef up FDA oversight of post-marketing commitments and maybe direct-to-consumer advertising (DTC) as well.”
Jon Symonds is the fifth CFO to leave a major pharmaceutical company so far this year. Ed Silverman at Pharmalot speculates that Symonds, who is leaving AstraZeneca to become a managing director at Goldman Sachs, may be looking for revenge, asking “…might Symonds view his former employer as a likely target for a merger or buyout?”
John Mack at the Pharma Marketing Blog managed to be invited to an advance screening of Michael Moore’s upcoming film SiCKO. His revelation: SiCKO does not savage the pharmaceutical industry as has been feared by pharma executives. Instead, the film’s wrath is directed toward for-profit health insurance companies.
