New Abbott i-STAT Handheld Point-of-Care Test Available in Canada
New Abbott i-STAT® Handheld Point-of-Care Test for the Rapid Detection of Early Pregnancy Available in Canada
Montreal, QC, Oct. 9, 2013 – Abbott today announced the international launch of i-STAT® β-hCG, the only in vitro diagnostic point-of-care whole blood test for the early detection of pregnancy. β-hCG is a hormone that is present as pregnancy progresses and is measured to determine pregnancy status. The new test is capable of delivering both quantitative and qualitative results within 10 minutes at the patient's bedside. In the emergency care setting, the rapid and accurate determination of pregnancy status is particularly important because a woman’s pregnancy status affects clinical decision-making, including decisions regarding diagnostic imaging, surgery, medications, and admission or discharge. The test is currently available in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
"i-STAT β-hCG is an important new test that provides healthcare providers with rapid, lab-quality results to accurately determine pregnancy status within minutes," said Sharon Bracken, president, Point of Care, Abbott. "Abbott is pleased to offer an additional solution to deliver process efficiencies that may help accelerate clinical decision making and improve patient care."
Some of the important features of Abbott's i-STAT β-hCG are that it is more sensitive than urine pregnancy tests; it can measure β–hCG in whole blood or plasma samples, which can usually be obtained quickly and easily; it streamlines the blood analysis process, which may help accelerate clinical-decision making and enhance patient care; and it integrates test results with the lab information system (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR), reducing both labor-intensive documentation and the risk of manual error.
The i-STAT β-hCG cartridge is fully compatible with the handheld i-STAT 1 System and the i-STAT 1 Wireless System.
