Hard-to-find 17 alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate available at Wedgewood Pharmacy
PHILADELPHIA, PA., Feb. 7, 2003 -- Wedgewood Pharmacy announced
availability of the difficult-to-obtain medication 17 alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate, which obstetricians have identified as the first medical treatment that can prevent premature births in large numbers of high-risk pregnant women.
This discovery could halt the growing increase in preterm
deliveries in this country. A nationwide team of researchers, in a
study sponsored by NIH, has found that administering this hormone
weekly during the mid to late stages of pregnancy can reduce
premature births by a third.
"The results of this NICHD study are significant," said George Malmberg, RPh., President, Wedgewood Pharmacy. "We are prepared to provide this medication immediately to physicians."
Wedgewood specializes in compounding difficult-to-obtain medications. Other medications used for hormone replacement therapy include estrone, estradiol valerate, progesterone in oil, and testosterone cypionate.
