Canon Communications Acquires Pharmapack and Enters $9 Billion European Market for Pharmaceutical Packaging

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 6, 2008 - Canon Communications LLC today announced its acquisition of the Pharmapack trade show from French organizer Oriex (Organization of International Congresses and Exhibitions), which begins today in Paris. Pharmapack is Europe's leading pharmaceutical packaging event and was successfully converted in 2007 from a biannual to an annual format. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition expands Canon's coverage of the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. In the United States, the company publishes Pharmaceutical & Medical Packaging News, Med Ad News and R&D Directions magazines; produces the PharmaLive.com website and interactive products; and organizes the Drug Development Summit, and the Manny Awards program. Last month, Canon announced the launch of PharmaMed Marketing & Media, a conference and exposition for pharmaceutical and medical product marketing executives.

Pharmapack serves Europe's $9 Billion (EUR 6 billion) pharmaceutical packaging marketplace with a special focus on the sectors fastest growth area--drug delivery packaging. While the overall European pharmaceutical packaging industry is expanding at 6% per year, advanced packaging such as prefillable syringes, inhalers, smart packaging, government-required unit doses, and high barrier and anti-counterfeit packaging is experiencing double-digit increases. Established in 1997, Pharmapack is the recognized forum for senior R&D, operations, and production executives from Europe's leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. The executive level conference addresses a wide range of emerging technologies and regulatory issues, while the 130 exhibitor tradeshow features the industry's leading suppliers to this sector.

Canon also announced that it will introduce the BIOMEDevice Europe conference and exhibition and co-locate this new show alongside Pharmapack in Paris. BIOMEDevice, the leading forum for the dynamic convergence marketplace of combination devices and biopharmaceuticals, sold out and wait listed its exhibit space when it debuted in San Jose, California, in October 2007, and attracted 3,010 attendees

"The synergies between these two shows could not be stronger," said Kevin O'Keefe, Senior Vice President of Canon's Events Division. "The addition of BIOMEDevice Europe to the highly successful Pharmapack show will broaden audience appeal to include senior design and manufacturing titles from Europe's leading medical device and biopharmaceutical producers. BIOMEDevice is all about collaborative product development of combination or drug delivery devices and partnering between medical device and pharmaceutical executives. Pharmapack focuses on the latest in drug delivery packaging."
