Abbott Executives To Chair Medical Device Lobby

From Associated Press (March 4, 2010)

WASHINGTON -- The medical device industry’s chief advocacy group, AdvaMed, said Thursday an Abbott Laboratories executive will serve as its chairman.

James Mazzo is President of Abbott Medical Optics, a maker of contacts lenses and vision products which was acquired by Abbott last year. He previously served as the company’s chairman and chief executive before its acquisition.

Mazzo will serve a two-year term as chairman of AdvaMed’s board of directors. He replaces Edwards Lifesciences CEO Mike Mussallem.

The Advanced Medical Technology Association is the largest medical device trade group in both membership and spending, with member companies including Medtronic Inc. and Boston Scientific Corp. In the last quarter of 2009 the group spent $284,569 to lobby Congress and the federal government on health care policy affecting devices.
