What is butenafine topical?

Butenafine topical (for the skin) is used in adults and children at least 12 years old to treat fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm.

Butenafine topical (for the skin) also helps relieve symptoms associated with fungal skin infections including itching, burning, cracking, and scaling.

Butenafine topical may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Butenafine topical side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Butenafine topical may cause serious side effects. Stop using butenafine topical and call your doctor at once if you have:

• severe burning, stinging, or irritation after using butenafine topical; or

• any new or worsening skin symptoms.

Common side effects of butenafine topical may include:

• stinging, burning, or itching where the medicine was applied.

Follow all directions on the label and package. Use exactly as directed. Tell your healthcare provider if you use other medicines or have other medical conditions or allergies.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use butenafine topical if you are allergic to it.

Do not use butenafine topical for the nails, scalp, in or near the mouth or eye, or vaginal yeast infections.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using butenafine topical if you have health problems or use other medications, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 12 years old without medical advice.

How should I use butenafine topical?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not take by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin.

Depending on what it is used for, butenafine topical is usually applied 1 to 2 times a day. Do not use this medicine more often or longer than directed. Your doctor can help determine how long you should use this medicine.

Wash your hands before and after applying this medicine. Use a mild soap to clean the skin area to be treated. Apply the medicine once the affected area is completely dry.

If you are using butenafine topical on your feet, apply the medicine to all areas including between and around your toes.

Keep using this medicine even if your symptoms quickly improve. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse.

Do not use butenafine topical to treat any condition that has not been checked by your doctor.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Apply the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not apply two doses at one time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 if anyone has accidentally swallowed the medicine.

What should I avoid while using butenafine topical?

Do not get butenafine topical in your eyes. If contact does occur, rinse with water.

Avoid using other medications on the areas you applied butenafine topical, unless your doctor tells you to.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting shoes that do not allow air circulation. Change your shoes and socks at least once daily while treating athlete's foot.

What other drugs will affect butenafine topical?

Medicine used on the skin is not likely to be affected by other drugs you use, but many drugs can interact. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
