Default meds difference

Can you tell me the difference?
Tylenol #3 and Lortab? which is stronger?
My daugher was given tylenol 3 for dental work and seems to me that 5mg hydro would have been a better choice? Isnt the tylenol 3 stronger? It has more codeine.

Truthfully- unless the pt has some kind of bleeding risk or potential for bleeding or she is taking other meds (talk to RPh if taking other meds 1st!) then my first choice would always be an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen. This isnt as strong for the pain as the others u mentioned- but helps with root of problem and therefore less pain in long run.
If pt stomach strong enough- can take pain meds with water only and no food- BUT NO MORE THAN A FEW DAYS AND FOLLOW DOSING INSTRUCTIONS ON BOTTLE.

Well, that didn't really answer your question, just suggested another drug.

Lortab contains Hydrocodone which is significantly stronger than the Codeine in the Tylenol 3.

Yes, There is 30mg of codeine in a tylenol 3, and only 5mg in certain Hydrocodone/apap combos.

But because of the strength of each drug, just because there is more than the other, it doesn't mean it is stronger.

You would have to take a lot more than 30mg codeine to approx equal 5mg Hydrocodone.
