is it scored on the other side? If so, it is generic percocet 5 (5mg oxycodone, 325mg apap), a schedule IIcontrolled narcotic made by mallinckrodt. If it is NOT scored on the reverse side, it is Cipro 250mg made by Bayer (an antibiotic).

Hi Stallion
This has always been a big mystery to me and maybe you could help me out?

I know when you use the RxList search function and type in 512, the first result is
Imprint Code: 512
Drug/Strength/Manufacturer: Cipro 250 mg - Bayer
Description: white round tablet

but further down on the page you also see
Imprint Code: MILES / 512
Drug/Strength/Manufacturer: Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride 291.5mg - Cipro - Quality Care
Description: Film Coated Tablet

(I assume the 291.5mg Ciprofloxacin HCl must equate to 250 mg of base)

Then if you do a search on Ciprofloxacin
The result for 512 does not show up, only
512 / MILES and
MILES / 512.

Miles Inc. became Bayer Corporation in April 1995, so I am assuming the imprint became CIPRO 250 (as it is today) sometime around then. The earliest Cipro label on the FDA database is dated August 2000, so I have been unable to find anywhere else on the internet to confirm this.

I have always assumed the 512 result on RxList was a typo, and the MILES imprint on the reverse had been omitted???

Maybe you or Kirby could provide some insight?

Robo, this is a very interesting topic and one I've often wondered about.

The white round 512 pill has always elicited a lot of comment. I know rxlist.com states it is Cipro. I assumed it was a typo because there was no generic for ciprofloxacin in the US until about nine months ago. I think Barr was the first with the exclusivity period.

Yet a credible poster on another board insisted '512' was precribed to him as Cipro well before Barr introduced the generic. At the time I thought "Okay, it's available in other countries but not in the US so maybe the poster is from another country."

I never got an answer about the country. But I do agree with you. The "Miles" was probably left off of the rxlist imprint. I think Miles was a Canadian company.

Thank you. I'll research it further with the info you have provided - and promise to report back if I find anything significant.

And I'm sure it's not the same as the Mallinckrodt '512' pill.

Thanks.

Thanks Kirby.

Will be good to have the mystery solved for once and for all.

I think MILES/512 must have been the imprint for branded Cipro prior to 1995 (when Miles Inc. became Bayer Corporation), so that would make the poster on the other board correct (assuming he too missed the vital MILES part of the imprint).

By the way Adam, I am sure your pill is generic Percocet®
Each pill contains Oxycodone 5 mg and Acetaminophen 325 mg
Description: White/Round Tab
Identification Code: Scored, debossed 512
You will find an image at
http://pharmaceuticals.mallinckrodt....ProductID=5412
Info at http://acetaminophen.and.hydrocodone.drugs.com

Another piece of the puzzle - RxList has been online since November 14, 1995. The MILES/512 imprint would have been current at that time.
