AMITRIPTYLINE (Elavil) is an antidepressant in the tricyclic class. It is also chemically related to Carisoprodol (Soma, and although it is not considered to have muscle relaxant properties, it does have a sedating effect and is sometimes perscribed for depression w/ associated insomnia or as a mild sleeping pill. The hydrochloride simply refers to which chemical salt is used to make the pill. hope this helps

You will find information on Amitriptyline at

The "hydrochloride" is the chemical form of the drug.
