I'm a dietitian who has worked a lot with drug-nutrient interactions in clinical settings, but I would like some professional pharmaceutical advice for my concern: my father is 76, generally robust in health, but talked his internist into giving him Namenda. My father does not have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, and is not at high risk of MI with his activity, diet, weight, and lab profiles (Chem 28). This is the only medication he is taking in addition to vitamins and an occasional OTC sleep aid with Benedryl. I have seen no information that Namenda is prophylactic/preventive for Alzheimer's. Are there any risks of downsides for him to be taking this drug 10 mg BID? Is there any evidence that Namenda improves memory in the absence of Alzheimer's? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
