Liquorice I have read from books saying that liquorice is effective in treating peptic ulcer, provided that the liquorice has been deglycyrrhizinated in order to avoid S/E such as hypokalemia, water and salt retention.
However, I have been taught by my professor that the liquorice contains glycyrrhizinic acid as active ingredients and it has been modified to the drug carbenoxolone for gastric ulcer, with the S/E being hypokalemia and water & salt retention.
It seems to me that there is contradiction between these two statements. And if what I have been taught is correct, deglyrrhizinated liquorice contains no active ingredients against ulcer, or does liquorice contain other ingredients against peptic ulcer?
Thanks all. [:I] |
