Default Confusion over generic versus not

I have a prescription for OC 40mg. I always got a pill marked 40 one side, oc the other. These pills now have an M on one side, 595 on the other. I am told that these are are NOT non-generic, but are in fact generic by others, but the pharmacist says they are not generic. This is a very small, owner operator and I feel he is taking advantage of me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
