Hi Jessika,
Tramadol is basically Ultram and I have taken it PRN for about 6 years. I might take one in the afternoon when I get home from school (work) or once in a while if my pain is really bad I'll take 2 at bedtime. Ultracet is Ultram and Tylenol and I have tried that combination, too. I know there are people on this list for whom Tramado is addictive - but it is not for me but does ease the pain without "knocking me out".

I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis but never started on the narcotics (powerful) drugs. I find it eases my pain back to what I call a "tolerable" level. I'm never pain free and don't expect to be. Hope this helps. Lynda

Hi Jessika,

I looked up both drugs on Google and they are both narcotics with potential for addiction.

I'm going through extremely difficult withdrawal from pain killers and sleeping pills and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I should have known better than to take them in the first place but the doctors said I shouldn't have problems with addiction as long as I only used them when I had insomnia or pain, which is most days and nights.

I'm really quite disenchanted with doctors as you can see. They're often far too liberal when it comes to dishing out narcotics. It's easier for them to stop the pain or the sleeping disorder rather than properly solving it.

If we suffer from pain we need to have the pain treated. I'm going cold turkey off both drugs and the withdrawal is horrible- three days now. I don't know how much longer it will last but I'm hanging in.

I finally got my doctor to send me to a neurologist who is, in turn, sending me to a pain clinic for injections where I have the back pain.
It's what he should have done two years ago rather than putting me on narcotics.

You might want to discuss alternatives to narcotics with your doctor such as treatment of pain rather than masking it.

Good luck,

jj

Well There is little treatment out there for me at the moment. I have re occuring kidney stones. And I Hurt just about everyday. I have surgerys and they just keep coming back.. I am sorry about your experience with your doctor..But I guess I see it different than you: all those medicines are out there to help you.. With any drug there is the chance of addiction, If I were to get hooked I wouldnt blame my dr, there is always a chance to get hooked, too many people out there are and then there are the ones that abuse it, and that is why it is hard for people in true pain to get the pain pills they need. I can say I am dependent on my meds though, I need them sometimes to get through a day. Doctors are getting to the point that they dont want to give the meds out because some may bring a law suit into it.. Doctors cant win for loosing these days.. Well that is how it is with the Doctors In My area.
jjbellinski Maybe you need to see another Doctor and see what they say about getting off the meds, is there anyhting you could take for the withdraws.. best of luck to you..

Hi Jessika,

Sorry to hear about your problem with recurring kidney stones. I guess you don't have much choice with respect to stopping the use of pain killers.

I'm hoping to treat my back pain with injections of cortisone and not have to go back on the pain killers.

The problem with pain killers is that they often eventually stop being effective.

I've actually gone the route of other doctors and am going into a pain clinic to be treated.

I thought there was a treatment by which kidney stones can be dissolved using a type of sonic treatment without invasive surgery. Is this not correct?

Good luck,

jj

Yes There Is An Ultasound That HTey Use To Break Them Up But When There Are Too Many Or They Are Too Big They Have Another Procedure They Preform Or They Do Surgery. THey Have To get Them Out Somehow.

Be Careful With Cortisone Shots However They Are Wishy Washy. I Have Had People Tell Me They Are Great And The Pain MAnagement Drs Will Tell You They Are Great But I Had One Only One Never Went Back For The Rest Because The Day After I Could Move I Was In So Much Pain. That Last Almost A Month. I Ended Up On Pain Meds Cuz That Shot That Was To "FIX" The Pain Made It 10 X Worse. I Hope It Goes Well For YOu I Really Do Just Make Sure You Do Research Get YOur Pros And Cons From Your Dr. I Dont Want You To End Up In The Same Situation I Was In.

I'm Not A Pharmacist Or A Medical Doctor. This Message Is Not Medical Advice Or Is It An Offer To Provide Medical Advice. All Drug I.Ds Should Be Validated By A Licensed MD Or Pharmacist. But I Do Enjoy Helping If I Can.
