Default risperdal to help my son sleep?

My son is an behavior treatment center for aggressive behavior, the doctors want to put him on 0.25 mg risperdal at night, to help him sleep. He has only been there 2 days and have not showed any problems sleeping. All I can find out on the internet is that there really is no information to find, risperdal is not used in the way that the MD wants to use it. If anyone has any information, or a site to get information I would graetly appreciate it. Thank You

Hey there
I would be leary about letting any doctor put a child on an atypical anti-psychotic for sleep. First off the drug was not tested or put through clinical trials for that purpose. Yet, many doctors insist on off-label prescribing of these powerful chemicals. If you go to google and do a search for "off-label use of Risperdal" you will see that the top half dozen links will be regarding lawsuits regarding this practice. And while I don't know your son's medical problem, psychiatric issues, or other drugs, I would suggest checking out some of the info at those legal sites before letting them try that drug on him. There are so many other drugs out there that ARE approved to help with sleep. It seems a bit hasty to put a kid on something so strong and with so little clinical information regarding its effects on children.

Here is a link I found particularly interesting:

It is a long article but well worth the read.

Good Luck,
Aria
