I had a severe knee injury as a kid but now its getting bad.
How it happened - I was racing a bike and my pedal broke off, my leg got caught on the spindal and it ground my knee all the way around to the bone i had 35 staples under my knee cap by some miicle i kept my leg.
recently i have been getting horrible pain when i walk bend or use it to do anything.
I lift weight frequently and i want to start working on my legs but am affraid to damage something further more besides getting my doctor to check it out i was wondering what i should take for the pain as tylenol and advil dont cut it anymore
also is it normal for pain to start some 8 years or so after an injury??? i haveent gone to him yet but would like to go with some knowlege

Hi Mr. Nap,

I'm not sure anyone on this board is really qualified to advise you about your knee. Certainly the best thing to do is have your doctor check it out. I wonder if you might have somehow re-injured it, and that might account for the new pain. It sounds awful, and I'm sorry you're going through it. I assume the doctor you see is an orthopedist or sports medicine guy, rather than your primary care provider. It sounds like a kind of specialized question.

Regarding pain pills...I hope you don't have to go there! I hope your doctor can give you some exercises to get your knee tracking right, or send you to PT for help. Any opiate or opioid pain med carries the risk of addiction, especially if you need to be on the med for a long time. People's susceptibility to addiction varies, but I think most of us on this board would say it's not a good thing to start if there's any way you can avoid it.

Just a thought, from my own experience. Some doctors are now proscribing a "new" pain med called Tramadol, a/k/a Ultram or Ultracet. For some reason its manufacturer tells doctors that it has no addiction risk. This is just scandalous, because it can be massively addictive and truly horrible to get off of. If your doctor offers you Ultram, make sure you talk with him about the potential for addiction. If he says there's nothing to worry about, you should check in with a different doctor. This is a huge problem across the country.

I hope your knee mends and you start feeling better soon. Please let us know how you are.

Check your other post regarding your knee and the pain medication questions. I made some suggestions there. I've had five knee operations and left you some ideas on your other thread. There are a couple of different procedures that you might possibly benefit from that I discuss there. Bottom line is that you need to see a professional prior to beginning any type of workout program.

It's totally normal to have a problem years after the injury. We can have an injury and it often takes time for a degenerative process to take place especially in the knee with cartilidge/kneecap problems. I had ongoing surgeries to my knees from old sports injuries for decades.

MaisieC is correct about the type of dr you need to see. Let us know what your orthopaedic surgeon has to say. Other than to get a referral I wouldn't even waste my time on a primary care dr with this problem. Get to the dr who can actually help you. Good luck and God bless.
