Default Need help/advice weaning from hydro. Desperate!

Hi, I have been a lurker on here and finally need help in kicking this ********************. I was prescribed lortab 10/500 last year and it only took a few months before this turned into an addiction. I had a rough time with lots of things early this year and think that's why I turned to hydrocodone to ease all the feelings. Now I am taking up to 8-10 a day and am tired, broke, and scared. I want to stop them so badly but as soon as I start the withdrawals, I am back at square one. Right now, I have about 30 pills that I can start a weaning schedule with....I know that won't keep the withdrawals from happening at all, but I want to try to limit how bad this is going to be. I am ready to start weaning ASAP, but thought I would hit you guys up to find out if anyone else has done this, how it worked, and what your schedule was. Also, ANY other advice will help SIGNIFICANTLY!!! It's gotten very bad for me and I don't want it to get any worse...I am stopping this now! I really need help and am begging for it, I am a bit of a prideful person and have a problem asking for help from people. Everyone always looks to me for the help. Ironic!! Thanks in advance for the help. I am going to start Narc. Anony. as soon as I can, but really need to get on this weaning deal. I looked into Suboxone, but can't afford it and think that I can beat this with a little outside help and some definite will and drive! I am committed...please help. Thanks so much everyone.

One thing that's on your side is that you haven't been abusing to long but it's still going to be a tough 4-5 days.Look for the "Thomas Recipe" here on the forum and follow as best you can.Good luck and hang in there.......Dave

Dave is right about you not having been abusing these pills for a really long time like so many of us did. I began using in 1968. Pretty stupid huh? Your detox will not be as bad as what some of us go through but you will still have w/d symptoms to deal with. And it won't be pleasant. It will be a nasty 4 days up to possibly a week. The thing is that we all have to stop this foolishness eventually or pay the dire consequences. You are being smart dealing with this now before things get really bad.

It's really impossible to give you an exact schedule for tapering off the pills. We are all different. I never could do an opiate taper. Not enough self-control. I liked taking the pills too much and if they were there I would take them. Of course that is just me. Hope you are stronger than me.

If we are under the care of dr tapering they will normally suggest that we reduce what we are taking by about 10% at a time, maybe a little more. You say you're taking UP TO 8-10 a day. What is it? Is it 8 or is it 10? You need to establish a starting place. Doesn't matter what it is, but you need a place to begin from so you can track your progress. You kind of need to experiment some with the amount you reduce by to see how well you do. If the symptoms are tolerable then you can speed the taper up some. If it's more than you care to suffer then slow it down.

It's very difficult to do this on our own with no controlled environment. That is what makes a rehab easier to deal with, at least it was for me. Even though it's a cold turkey detox we aren't having to wing it like we do tapering on our own. It's very hard to give instructions to someone who is alone trying to detox with the drugs playing tricks on your mind the entire time. You can post here and we will try to help with suggestions as you go. Just get started and see how you feel as you progress. You might want to check out the Thomas Recipe as Dave suggested. That would certainly help some with the w/d symptoms. Do you have anyone that can help you with this? I really think you would be more successful if you had a friend or family member helping you with managing your medication. Let us know how you are doing. Good luck.
