Need advice QUITTING METHADONE!
Need advice QUITTING METHADONE!
Ok I'm scared shiiitless here I've NEVER tried to quit and never felt the effects of withdrawal from opiates...I've been taking Methadone for almost 2 months now...started at 20 and the counselor kept asking me if my urges are going away...Well I was getting high off the methadone at first and in the beginning I had no urges because I was HIGH...After about a week, he asked me if I had urges, well after a week I wasn't getting high off the stuff as much so of COURSE I had urges...About a week ago I went up to 70 from 60 and I just facking opened my eyes and realized wtf is going on here. SO before you guys flame me, I'm sorry I didn't know any better. The counselor SHOULD of asked me if I was withdrawaling from opiates instead of ARE MY URGES GOING AWAY...Well I was never feeling real bad and they were still increasing my doses...So I'm 2 months into the program and I want to quit this stuff. My initial plan was like this...We usually pay Fridays but if u don't have money on Fridays, they will still dose you on the weekend and Monday you have to pay or else they detox you...SO I was going to tell them Friday that I'll pay Monday just to get the weekend dose and Monday I was going to not pay and start detox...Well I decided to alter my plan a little bit. I payed Monday so I can still dose for the week, but decided that what I'm going to do is just dose every other day so I can detox next monday...So this week I"m going to dose every other day...Next week when THey detox me, i'll probably go down 10 mg a day or whatever...HOW BAD is this going to be?!?!? I've only been doin it for 2 months so will this help?My tolerence? well I'm still even get high off my dose a little. Is my plan good? Would you alter it anyway?

getting off of methadone
getting of off methadone is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Methadone is a synthetic opiate unlike most of the other natural opiates meaning that it's man made and it is stored in the fat cells of the body used up like sugar by the muscles instead of being metabolized in the liver like most other opiates, which in your case is good news and bad news. The good news is that you wont start withdrawing from the medicine until it is comepletely left all of your body including any fat cells that are storing the methadone, and from my experience in large dose say 80 mgs per day that can last up to 4 to 6 weeks. Now what dose were you taking and for exactly how long. do you have any of the methadone left, I am taking it that you don't. Youears really need to get off this as fast as you can because it only gets worse it never gets better you have to trust me on this after 25 years of taking every drug there is I know better than anyone what your going to go through. I have to leave now for my doctor's appointment but I will be on the internet later tonight and if you like please write me at my email address email@example.com and I will get back to you as fast as I can. I can help you with your problem. I will talk to you later
i came off 90ml of methadone on my own - locked myself in my house, got clonidine patches from my GP: it was hell, but worth it. firstname.lastname@example.org willpower goes a long way, as well as determination. methadone is horrible. it will make your bones ache for weeks after coming off of it too. feel fee to contact me.
Okay, methadone does not get stored up in fat cells, nor will your last dose last you for 4-8 weeks. It is metabolized by the liver (tagamet will increase blood levels of methadone by slowing down metabolism at one of the key enzymes).
It is long acting and the withdrawl will last longer than most commonly abused opiates/opiods. I was on methadone maintenance for about 3 years, and getting off it sucked. On the other hand I know I would have gone through worse and likely not straightened my life out (job, mental health care, getting away from my drug friends). It was worth it, but I'm glad I'm done with it too.
At a stable blocking dose - minimum of 70-90mg for most people - you will generally stop getting high (it will last throughout the day) AND stop having urges to abuse opiates. (won't help with wanting to use drugs in general) Once I got on a stable dose I think I did heroin exactly once and it didn't do a damn thing.
If you had a good reason to get on methadone please consider what you're going to do when you withdraw (physically and psychologically). Detoxing 10mg a day is going to make you very, very sick. Talk to the counsellor about your concerns - many clinics offer both maintenance and short term taper. Maintenance is a big help for some people who have trouble staying quit, short term treatment is more to help you cope through withdrawl.
I'm not going to assume that I know what is best for you. If you've got a good support system in your life and aren't having any issues with wanting to go back to abusing opiates then less treatment and less disturbance in your life is best.
I went through a cold-turkey inpatient detox to get off methadone after three years. My life was relatively stable and after leaving my ex who's still struggling with drugs I decided to move home - where methadone treatment was difficult and I had no job to pay for it. I was heavily sedated for about a week and incapacitated for a couple months. This is not a recommended way to get off of methadone, and it often leads to relapses. But if you want to know what to do to handle the physical part I can give you that info.
Good luck either way you go on this. :-)
I agree with Jewlez!!! The one thing you could look into is suboxone (buprenorphene)??
If you don't get on the suboxone then here is a recipe for detoxing that has proven successfull......Good luck...Dave
Pain, Addiction & Withdrawal Support
> The Thomas Recipe for Cold Turkey Withdrawal
PLEASE NOTE: I am not a doctor, simply a long-time Rx opiate junkie who has had many opportunities to develop a way to detox. This is a recipe for at-home self-detox from opiates based on my experience as well as that of many other addicts. It is not intended as professional medical advice. It is always wise to make sure none of the recipe ingredients or procedures conflict with medications you may be taking. Likewise, if you have any medical condition, disease, allergy or any other health issue, consult your doctor before using the recipe. Thanks, Thomas
If you can't take time off to detox, I recommend you follow a taper regimen using your drug of choice or suitable alternate -- the slower the taper, the better.
For the Recipe, You'll need:
1. Valium (or another benzodiazepine such as Klonopin, Librium, Ativan or Xanax). Of these, Valium and Klonopin are best suited for tapering since they come in tablet form. Librium is also an excellent detox benzo, but comes in capsules, making it hard to taper the dose. Ativan or Xanax should only be used if you can't get one of the others.
2. Imodium (over the counter, any drug or grocery store).
3. L-Tyrosine (500 mg caps) from the health food store.
4. Strong wide-spectrum mineral supplement with at least 100% RDA of Zinc, Phosphorus, Copper, Magnesium and Potassium (you may not find the potassium in the same supplement).
5. Vitamin B6 caps.
6. Access to hot baths or a Jacuzzi (or hot showers if that's all that's available).
How to use the recipe:
Start the vitamin/mineral supplement right away (or the first day you can keep it down), preferably with food. Potassium early in the detox is important to help relieve RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome). Bananas are a good source of potassium if you can't find a supplement for it.
Begin your detox with regular doses of Valium (or alternate benzo). Start with a dose high enough to produce sleep. Before you use any benzo, make sure you're aware of how often it can be safely taken. Different benzos have different dosing schedules. Taper your Valium dosage down after each day. The goal is to get through day 4, after which the worst WD symptoms will subside. You shouldn't need the Valium after day 4 or 5.
During detox, hit the hot bath or Jacuzzi as often as you need to for muscle aches. Don't underestimate the effectiveness of hot soaks. Spend the entire time, if necessary, in a hot bath. This simple method will alleviate what is for many the worst opiate WD symptom.
Use the Imodium aggressively to stop the runs. Take as much as you need, as often as you need it. Don't take it, however, if you don't need it.
At the end of the fourth day, you should be waking up from the Valium and experiencing the beginnings of the opiate WD malaise. Upon rising (empty stomach), take the L-Tyrosine. Try 2000 mgs, and scale up or down, depending on how you feel. You can take up to 4,000 mgs. Take the L-Tyrosine with B6 to help absorption. Wait about one hour before eating breakfast. The L-Tyrosine will give you a surge of physical and mental energy that will help counteract the malaise. You may continue to take it each morning for as long as it helps. If you find it gives you the "coffee jitters," consider lowering the dosage or discontinuing it altogether. Occasionally, L-Tyrosine can cause the runs. Unlike the runs from opiate WD, however, this effect of L-Tyrosine is mild and normally does not return after the first hour. Lowering the dosage may help.
Continue to take the vitamin/mineral supplement with breakfast.
As soon as you can force yourself to, get some mild exercise such as walking, cycling, swimming, etc. This will be hard at first, but will make you feel considerably better.
I know it's been 4 years. But for those who are reading. Thomas has the right recipe!!
In reference to Thomas's "recipe"... i have been taking 20-30mg of methadone recreationally for over a year now. My husband takes it so i would take one here and there for fun and now I'm hooked. I got a regular (specialist) family doctor to perscribe it to me to help ween me off it. Once i started getting my own script i actually ended up taking more than i did before seeing him because now i don't have to bum them off my husband (as much) any more. I am up to 20-30mg/day. Not too bad i know but we've ran out a handful of times so I've experienced my fair share of withdrawals but only once till day three and that was awful.
Anyways, I'm ready to have another baby and just had my IUD taken out (birth control thing for those who don't know) which means i could get pregnant any time. I refuse to be pregnant and take methadone. I've read all about the dangers of quitting once you're already pregnant which means i need to quit now. In fact, I'm refusing to have sex until i do! I am off work until January 3rd which gives me 11 days. BUT... we're taking a trip (1,000 mile drive ) to visit my family for Christmas and i don't want to withdrawal while I'm there- or while I'm in the car for 16 hours. My plan is to start cutting back today and during the 6 day trip, taking 5 mgs at a time only when i start feeling jittery or can't sleep. Then by the time i get back I'll have hopefully cut back SOME. I'll then have 5 days till i go back to work-plus a new years resolution -to detox. And i know i wont be great by the time i go back to work but I'm thinking I won't still be miserable.
I read your "recipe" Thomas and i think I'm gonna try that. Does anyone have any feedback? Advice? Please don't write telling me anything about anything that would make me think i can't do it.What i really need is some encouragement cause i don't get it here. Only temptation. Maybe once i quit it will make my husband think more seriously about quitting himself.
That's another thing i am and have been terrified about is that i will begin to resent him once i quit and he's still blowing every last dime we have on them. By quitting i wont NOT be able to say anything about it cause i do it too. Does that make any sense? Even though he takes ten times as much as me, i still had no right to call him out cause i was doing it too.
Another question for you guys- is there such a thing as a lethal dose of methadone? Cause my husband takes 200mgs each day!!! Yes...20 pills. He's even taken 30 (300mgs) a couple times before (but that is not normal for him). He says he's down to 160 but who knows. Either way its too much. We see the same doctor. He started us both out at 90 pills/month 3/day. My huaband would take them in 4 days. Every last one. Is this gonna kill him? He doesn't walk around looking like a zombie. He works every day and if you didn't know he takes pills, you would never know by talking to him etc.
i switched to suboxone to get off methadone. um, cold turkey off that amount is kinda askin for failure. i know you wanted positive stuff, but dont be doin that.
you need to either taper off the methadone, slowly. real slow.
or switch to subs, and you can taper off them.
im off methadone (iv over here btw) since july 13 2009, and now off sub since october 22 this year.....
its not an easy road but its doable, and seeing as you only have a year under your belt, its totally a good idea to do this now, i did over 20 years, on all sorts, finally gettin it sorted. yeh couple of oooops moments, but doing pretty well really.
good luck. and lethal dose??? i know a guy who will hit 400mg in a day, its all to do with tolerance, the more ya have, the more you can have...
hope it goes ok for ya whatever you decide, but 11 days, on 30mg is gonna be a hard road.
I no it's been 2 years, but I'm going to reply anyways. I think that detoxing this something that you should do with your husband, but believe me I understand if it's something you have to do for yourself. I only say that because I know that temptation can be very hard to ignore.
I want to add a couple of things to the Thomas recipe that people are using #1 is fluids. It is very important to stay hydrated during this time so that you don't want up in the hospital from dehydration. #2 is nausea medication. Meds like promethazine will help keep fluids down. Good luck to all of you!
I would also like to add that preparation is key. I know that in some cases people are forced to kick abruptly, which I too have done on several occasions. But if you can help it, don"t!

#1: Go to a doctor & tell them that some one close to you has recently died and that you're having alot of emotional distress.
#2: You were recently in a auto accident and are having extreme anxiety & some panic attacks when driving or riding now.
Now go to the store (if u have the $) and get some gatorade. (not the low carb, low calorie ones). While you're @ the store also pick up some imodium & multi vitamins.
Now heres a way to obtain some presription nausa meds. If you can go to the emergency room complaining of severe nausea & vomiting. They will put some fluids in you and send u home with at least a ten day supply of a med like promethazine.
The most important thing that I would like to talk about is tapering. It is very important that you taper down to a very low dose of the opiate medication that you were taking. but if you can't, all of these other thing should help you get through it. Again good luck to you and I hope that you succeed.
