Help... addicted to Vicodin!! So here goes... deep breath.... I have a very addictive personality. I replace a drug with a new drug. I used to drink ALOT, then I replaced drinking with crystal meth. I snorted meth for about 5 years. I finally got to the point where I decided I needed help and stopped cold turkey. I went to an outpatient rehab program for 2 weeks and learned alot of really good information, got on 2 antidepressants and have stayed off meth & drinking for 1 1/2 years now. Sounds great, huh?
Well it would be if I would have never taken that first vicodin about 7 months ago. I take about 5-6 vicodins per day (I would take alot more if I could afford to buy them) I buy them off the street. They gave me energy and put me in a great mood. Oh, I forgot to mention that I stopped taking my antidepressants when I started on vicodin. When I don't have any pills, I am in a horrible mood, have diarrhea and just feel like ????. I haven't gone more than 1-2 days without in all this time. They don't have any "high" effects on me anymore, have to take them to keep from getting sick.
My husband does not know I am doing this and am afraid to tell him that I am once again addicted to something! Can I get off vicodin without going to a treatment center? I REALLY NEED HELP!!!
Thanks you for reading this & any info will be greatly appreciated!!! -

Thanks you for reading this & any info will be greatly appreciated!!! Hi mindme ..... Welcome to the forum. I completely understand your problem and your situation as well, It's a tough one for sure, but one that is very familiar here. You have taken a very important step by just admitting that you have a problem, and by posting it here for others to see and read. You will get many responses so please just be patient ok?
The answer to your question is yes, you can get free from the Vicodin without the need to go to a treatment center. While your problem is not terrible with the 5-6 Vicodin per day, it is a problem none the less. My very first thoughts is for you to just use the "cold turkey" approach method of detoxing from those pills. Some people can just taper their dose down and then jump, but it takes a very strong person to be able to use that approach as most just want to gobble their pills down right away. Sounds like you might be one of them so I just suggest that you stop abruptly and then deal with the symptoms ok?
Like you said, you are NOT getting high from them anymore, just maintaining your addiction so you will not get sick. So just stop taking these pills immediately and you will have anywhere from 3-4 days of real bad symptoms and then it will be over as far as the physical problems go. Then it will be the mental game that you will need to deal with. Just google the "Thomas Recipe" for help with those symptoms. There are lots of vitamins and mineral supplements in it to help you get through the worse of those symptoms ok?
Also if you stay as busy as possible and get some daily exercise it will also do wonders to help keep your mind off those symptoms as well. You are going to be feeling like you have a very bad case of the flu and your husband will think that too most likely if you do not want to inform him of your addiction, or the problem you are having with it ok?? Just walking everyday will help so much to keep thise symptoms to a very minimum level.
This is the very best gift you will ever give yourself so congratulations for again taking the first step in reporting that you even have this problem! Please be patient and others will be here shortly. Read around the forum at look at some of the many posts that all have the same troubles as you do ok? You CAN do this and I for one am very proud of you for coming here. If I can be of further help then all you need to do is just ask. Hope this helps and again welcome to this forum! God Bless....Denny -
I feel for you. I got into vic's as a means to stop drinking. I got hurt and noticed that not only did they make me feel better than drinking, they actually made me talk and open up as well.
I REALLY feel you there. I am on Day 4 of stopping CT at a much higher dosage than you. I highly recommend the same for you. You and I seem to have that 'replacement drug' mentality. The only way to conquer that is to leave it all alone.
Day 1-3 will be hell. Day 4 is seeming like I will start to improve. I will continue to check on you.

You should also get yourself into some meetings with NA, AA, or CR, which is Celebrate Recovery and that is a religious-based group that also teaches the same basic 12-step approach to help you get clean, and more importantly, stay clean for life!
You can just also google for a meeting in your area ok? Best wishes to you and keep posting as you can use this as your journal and look back on and read how you are doing and what you were doing at this time! -
Here is the link to the Thomas Recipe that I mentioned in my first post to you! Best wishes and please keep right on posting with any and all other information as it comes to you!
The Thomas Recipe http://www.drugs.com/forum/featured-...wal-35169.html
You may not need the Benzo's that are suggested in the recipe so please just idnore them until you see how you are going to be feeling ok?
One more thing....you need to go after this detox just as hard as you have in obtaining those pills at times!

Hi there Mindme. Welcome to this fantastic forum. This place is so helpful and has been here for me every time I ask. DennyD is so right. You can absolutely do this. I think DennyD probably read you right about going C.T.. I have done the taper as well as the C.T. method. I am not a gobbler and have controlled my useage , 15mg./ daily for seven years now. Dont let the low dose fool you. I can get clean but I cant for the life of me stay clean. DennyD is right about N.A. or C.R. I have not gone but am trying to get there this time so I can stay clean. For many the physical WD is the hardest part. Give yourself at least 4 or 5 days and your physical symptoms should improve. Then the mental part will kick in. If you can go to N.A it will increase your chances to get and stay clean. I will tell you what I tell myself. The prize we seek is FREEDOM. I was a free man seven years ago . Then I traded freedom for hydrocodone. You will be free in 6 or 7 days . Remember the days when your head was clear and your feelings were your own and not Vicodin induced ? You can do this. Peace -
Hi Mindi, you can do this. I was up to ridiculous amounts of Norco some days, prescribed for pain, but soon realized my addictive nature. When I tapered I felt sicker than when I just stopped, so cold turkey may be best for you. I am on day 9 definately no expert, just want to stop addictive things this being the big one. I am looking at finding other ways to help my pain so I wont have to be enslaved to pills again. You have alot of people here that understand. It took me about 7 days to feel better emotionally with ups and downs still, but along the way I have dealt with painful TMJ my entire detox that has kicked my rear. Opiate pain meds did nothing for that pain surprisingly so I decided to jump. Each day has been better as long as I am patient with the process. And when I am scared or freaking out, I come here to post. Someone will always show up with an answer to help me -

Thank you for all of the help and encouragement, you made me cry! -

I have been right where you are right now, and been there so many times as well! It is so important for you to realize that you CAN do this! It may seem like such a huge task to take on, but with a large effort on your part, and the help of many here on this forum, you WILL get yourself clean, and more importantly, stay clean for life! Let me know how I may help further and I will do anything that I can to do so! God Bless....Denny

Don't mean to high jack this thread but I wanted to say Hi to Denny.. We have never talked but I have read a few of your post and find it amazing that you went through all the surgerys you have without taking any narcotics. You're one tough cookie.. I hope you are doing well.. -
Hi Mindime.. I am tapering off of norco and will be jumping off from four a day tomorrow.. I have found an n/a meeting in my area tomorrow night at 5.. So I'll be going to my first meeting tomorrow.. I'm excited and scared at the same time.. If you want, I'll let you know how it went when I get home.. Welcome to the site and best of luck to you. -
Yes, that would be great! Are things going well for you so far? I have been using this site for awhile, but not for good. I always looked up the pills I was buying to make sure they were 10mg. I was afraid that when I posted there would be some negative comments but have been very pleasantly surprised at all the encouragement!! -
Dear mindime,
Welcome to the forum. I just wanted to pass along a few thoughts, to see if it helps. Our problem is not the substance we abuse, our problem (yours and mine!) is addiction. Until we treat the true underlying problem, we are doomed to turn to another pill or another drug.
As you've already experienced, it is not too difficult to get past the initial physical detox off a drug or alcohol, but what trips us up is staying clean for the long term. That's because our disease is far more complex than simply the physical addiction.
Addiction affects every aspect of our lives, and we need to address the mental and emotional pieces of this disease - or we're very likely to go back to drugs, in one form or another. The best tool for addressing all aspects of this disease is a 12-step program, such as NA, AA or Celebrate Recovery. It's simply too powerful to do it on our own, as we haven't got the tools. It's the 12 steps that helps us to learn how to manage life without a drug or drink. Until we learn better, we end up returning to the only thing we've known - a drink or drug.
To find an AA meeting: http://www.aa.org/lang/en/subpage.cfm?page=28
To find an NA meeting: http://www.na.org/index.php?ID=home-content-fm
To find a CR meeting: http://www.celebraterecovery.com/?page_id=8
I urge you to get to some meetings - the sooner, the better. This forum is a great source of support, but when it comes to the real nitty gritty of how to stay clean (long-term), we need a 12-step program to start us in the right direction.
God bless,
Ruth
I'd rather see someone clean and sober - and hating me because I told them what they needed to hear -
rather than see someone drunk or high - and liking me because I told them what they wanted to hear.

I took my last Norco at about 7 last night and am feeling ok.. a little depressed (depression seems to be my worst symptom of withdrawl) but I am remembering all the wonderful advice from the people on this site.. I am putting on some make-up, getting ready to go to the N/A meeting tonight. I have came up with a hundred excuses not to attend, but I'm going to go no matter how many more pop in my head. I will report back to you when I get home.. By the way, how are you feeling?
