You can but with most SSI cases you will be denied your first time. Second time is usally when you get accepted for SSI. Make sure you try a second time when you get denied your first time. I know quite a few people that are on SSI and they all got denied their first time.

If I were you I would call a lawyer who takes disability cases. Your chances of getting approved will be better with having an attorney. A lot of them work on a contigency basis. Which means if you get approved, they get a percentage of your settlement. Not of future payments though. Just of whatever is owed form back disablity. It is usually between 25 and 35 percent. It is worth it because the lawyer does all of the work. They subpoena all your records for you. Look into it. But find a good lawyer.

Getting SSI for Hep C is not a given. Some people have it and aren't sick at all. You would have to prove through your medical records that the disease or the medicine is debilitating. The treatment for Hep C is taking interferon injections and pills for 6 months to one year. Some people have side effects which are flu like symptoms, more serious for some than others, some have no side effects at all. Sometimes the treatment clears the Hep C totally but sometimes you have to take more than one round of the meds.
Doc is correct, you will almost always be rejected the first time around which is the governments way of discouraging people from trying again, figuring they'll just give up. You CAN do it yourself but I agree with her. It's much easier to let a lawyer do the work. It takes a long time and the lawyer gets his cut but only from your first payment which will include some retroactive money. Remember though, you will have to prove the Hep C makes you unable to work.

Default Receiving SSDI due to Hep C

    Greetings,

My story is rather long so......I will edit it greatly. Yes, you can receive SSDI for Hep C. However, you must be able to prove, through your doctors and medical records, that it truly has made you disabled. I went through two treatments. And those tx's left me a shell of the person I had been. It's not easy to get SSDI because of Hep C. Unless you've been severely affected by it or the meds, it will be difficult. Get that attorney involved. They have a financial "cap" in terms of their reimbursement for services. I believe they are allowed to charge just over 5K per case. It's a flat fee, so they won't be eating away any back pay you might receive if you're accepted.

I would say go for it. It took well over a year for me, but I have it now. For better or for worse. Good luck!

    Peace,

PS: I was denied the first time. But, was approved on my first appeal, (Reconsideration). Bad news....no back pay. Good news....no money to the attorney!
