    Lightbulb earache pain

I hope im doing this right and this message gets to you. I have a remedy for instant relief of an earache. My motherinlaw is a nurse and my husband still uses this remedy today.
Heat up a small amount of regular hydrogen peroxide. I do it in a spoon and hold it over a candle flame. just long enough to heat (the heat alone will cause relief so heat as much as you are able to stand) next get a piece of cotton that you are going to satuarate with peroxide and then squeeze excess so eyeball the size cotton you will need. place the warm piece of cotton in your ear. dont squeeze out too much cause a couple of drops in your ear will help.
I have used this on my kids even pets for emergencies. Since you have already seen a physician i would try this. I hope this helps. earaches are terrible.

I would go down to emerg and see if maybe they can order you a painkiller.Advil is ok for common pain but not acute moderate to severe pain. That's my suggestion anyway.Good luck and I hope you feel better soon, nothing worse then not being able to control pain.....Dave

Ear infections are horrible, and the pain is tremendous, I had one that lasted 6 months, and even taking Norco 10 the pain was unbearable. Go see a ENT (Otolaryngologist- ear, nose and throat Doc), vacuuming the ears out the right way helps a lot. I would be careful with the peroxide remedy the other person suggested, it will dissolve the ear wax, and that was my problem, I lost all my wax, it protects you from infection, and it takes a long time to grow back, that's why I had it for 6 months. Try and keep Q-Tips out of your ears as well, I had some cotton stuck in mine at the time too, and my pain went through the roof.
Go see an ENT, a PCP doesn't have the equipment to help you right.

    Default Burst Ear Drum

A while ago my 4 year old daughter had an ear infection...but since she never complains...I missed the symptoms.

Well, I went to pick her up at school and her ear and neck were all covered in blood and pus (gross)

I felt so bad...and I was totally freaked out. Turned out her ear drum had burst at school and noone even noticed.

Doctor told me that the pain will get unbearable and then pop! immediate relief. She's fine now - no permanent damage.

I really suggest you go to the emergency room as your ear drum may be near rupturing. Pain pills will most likely only take the edge off....you need stronger antibiotics and a shot of morphine.

    Goodluck

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE ADVICE/REPLIES

However, I didn't use any of it

I was on pain killers every 4 hours since the pain was UNBEARABLE...I couldn't even sleep or anything...so for 3days I was on pain killers(advil), which was really bad since after the pain killers wear off, I take it again but the tablet takes about 1hr-1hr and 30min to take effect, which the pain came back.

When I typed my first post, I was using those droplets my family doctor gave me, but it wasn't really helping, and coming from a chinese family, my moms like TRUST ME...so I took some herbal stuff(chinese cultural thing) and after a full day of drinking it(1 cup every 5hrs, twice), I didn't have to take pain killers at night since it was just minor pain not INTENSELY like before...

I'm not sure if that helped A LOT or just a bit or not even, since the day I woke up(the day to take the herbal stuff) my ear kinda felt better, but It might have been the pain killer I took a few hrs before since once it wears out during my sleep, I wake up instantly cuz of the pain and have to take another...

Since she told me I cant mix western and chinese medicine together, I was definitely VERY scared because honestly...the pain was REALLY REALLY REALLY bad...and that means I cant take pain killers if I really needed to again...

But now everything seems fine...*knock on wood* However I still get minor and sudden aches near my cheek part(like when your eating something VERY sour suddenly), I hope that goes away =)

Seriously thought Ear Infections is one of the most %$^^%&%^&^%& PAINFULLEST THING a person can feel...since it's internal within your ear, you can't do anything to it...

I hope someone develops a FAST/INSTANT cure or ATLEAST relief for ear infection, instead of taking anti-biotics orally or droplets and letting it heal itself...cause during that time...ITS SO PAINFUL :'(

    Default try this method

I'm hoping that you are not in pain by now, but if you still are,
please try this method. I've learned it in Europe and it has always
worked for me . I used it on my little girl, also.
Put a lot of salt on a dry washcloths or small towel. Wrap the towel
around it, the way you would wrap a little package. Heat it in the
microvave for a minute or so until you can feel the heat , but make
sure it's not burning. Lay down on the pillow and put the package
against your ear and the pillow. Stay like that until it it cools off
and repeat the process again. I used to get a lot of ear infections
and this method never failed me. You should feel an instant relief
in about 2 minutes. The more u do it, the better it gets. Make
sure the salt stays inside the cloth. Repeat as many times as
needed. As soon as it cools off, heat it up again in the microwave.
Again , make sure it's warm enough and not burning. Hope it helps
you, as it helped me , so many times. Of course , I'm not a doctor,
but that's what worked for my family and me .

    Exclamation Ear Infection pain relief

I wanted to correct what was posted above about not being able to use Eastern & Western medicine together. Ignorance is not bliss, people really need to do they're research before speaking about something so blindly.

Eastern medicine: Holistic or herbal remedies (example: acupuncture, noninvasive)

Western medicine: Man made chemicals with partial herbal remedies
( example: prescription meds or surgery, invasive)

You can use Eastern & Western medicine together!!!! I don't know who said that but I would definitely check her credentials & her GPA while she was in school. Honestly if you use your noggin that's like saying while your on antibiotics don't apply basil oil to your ear or don't drink soothing hot tea.

Basil oil is used in ear candling, it is used to sooth any irritation that may occur after candling.

Hot compress applied to the ear as long as you are on antibiotics works great. If your not on antibiotics the heat could promote infection & make worse.

I wouldn't suggest crying because all that's doing is causing more inflammation & pressure around the area.
I encourage people to research everything that I've said to the max. Now that doesn't mean one article & please check your sources.

    Happy painless days to all!

The problem is, i have a hole in my ear that was suppose to heal years ago.. therefore i cant have drops or herbal candles.. I have even notices my left side of my face is swollen, from my jaw to the top of my ear.. I am taking antibiotics (Flucloxacillin) im taking 30mg codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours. They take an hour or more to kick in, they stop working an hour before my next lot is due, i am in pain constantly.. I cry alot too, i try hard not to as it causes me more pain, i find it difficult to blow my nose.. I have been soo tempted to overdose but knowing my luck i will live and suffer with liver problems for life! I have had this infection for 6 days now and i am really getting sick of it! going to doctors tomorrow to see if i can be reffered to a ear and throat specialist! this needs to end now!!

Default I do not know what to do.

I have also gotten a ear infection (also in the left ear), and i have never experienced something more painful than this. I have no idea what to do, like you guys i feel like killing myself and i have only had this for three days. I cant eat, i cant speak, i cant lay down, i cant move my head, i cant sleep, my head and neck hurts so much, and i cant touch the left area of my face, it hurts everyhere, it even hurt when when someone just passes by me (without touching me, the wind that comes along when they pass by makes me feel the got damn pain). I have never cried this much before, and i feel so sorry for my self which is completely absurd when i have a cancer sick mother here at home with me. Yesterday i went to the district health care centre, and the doctor told me that i have an ear infection, and i was given antibiotic tablets, in swedish they are called, "Kåvepenin" - fenoximetylpenicillinkalium 800mg and he said that i should take six tablets a day. And i asked him, how should i handle the pain? And he said that i should take "alvedon" (Paracetamol) which is a form of painkiller. But it does not work on my body since i have been taking it for so many years, i'm sort of immune against it. And i told him that, i said that inorder for them to work on me i have to take like 4-5 tablets, which is very dangerous. But he didn't care, stupid bastard. And during the evening, i couldn't bear with the pain and so i took a cab to the emergency, and the doctors there provided me with antibiotic droplets and a stonger new painkiller called Citodon. And they told me to continue as well with the antibiotic tablets that i had recieved earlier from the other doctor. And the painkillers help, but after 2-3 hours the pain is back. I couldnt sleep during the whole night and it takes about 45 minutes for the pain killer to work. i recieved the pain killers yesterday during 11 pm. and up tp now 6pm. i have taken 10 tablets. is that normal?!? Im so afraid that i will hurt my liver, but i cant bare this pain, its hurts so much. And as most of you, i'm crying as im writing this. ooooooh what have i done to deserve thiiiiiiiiisssssss???? i would rather have menstrual pains my whole life than to have to bear this pain............

    Thumbs up ear infection pain

I had a root canal done and there was a huge infection in my tooth that traveled to my ear and obviously i got an ear infection! the worst pain in my life, it felt as though someone hit me in the face with a bat my jaw, my cheek, my inner ear, and outer ear throbbed and swelled. the doctor put me on oral antibiotics and narcotics to help with the pain. but my ear was so swollen and tender that not even the pain pills worked i was desperate to find some way to relieve the pain. and i found one so i hope it helps who ever else has to suffer through this. If your doctor gave you pain pills take one and take an ice pack ( the ones filled with gel, they form to your face nicely) put the ice pack down on the pillow and lay with your infected ear on the ice pack. it will be a tab bit uncomfortable at first so adjust the ice pack so its sits comfortably on your ear but it actually starts to relieve everything, your going to want to do this a couple times so at first its going to be a little frustrating having to switch out the ice packs every time they get warm i did this for two days and every time i got up to change the ice pack my ear was feeling better and better.(every time i had the ice pack on my ear the throbbing seemed to stop it was instant relief) im on day 3 and i haven't used the ice pack once yet today. the cold not only soothes the pain but its helps bring down inflammation and allows your ear to drain. now keep in mind your still going to be a little tender around the ear but the throbbing and pinching feeling does go away. i hope this helps someone besides me. good luck!

    Default Severe Ear Pain

The only reason I'm posting is to continue this thread so if anyone comes to look they can find that they are not crazy or alone or dying. And to offer a time-frame so they know when relief might be on the horizon.

My ear issue started about a week ago. I thought I had something in my ear. I haven't been sick in over a year, I don't swim (it's cold here) and I don't use q-tips. The only thing I have done differently in the past month is I have been using ear buds at the library while I am learning something on my laptop. I have them in for about 2 hours at a time, 3-4 days a week. Other than that, I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to my ears.

I started using different home remedies when this started to try and address the mild discomfort and the feeling that something was in my ear. I really recommend not doing this, btw. I think I made it worse. No salt, no oil, no garlic, no peroxide, no alcohol. And when you take a shower find a way to cover the ear. Don't get water in it, even it seems to feel good. Nothing helped me and the outer ear started to swell and the pain became much worse.

Anyway, it finally became so excruciatingly painful that I made an appt with a family doc. We have no insurance, but it felt like my only option. The pain, the muffling, the swelling had/has me in tears. I've given birth 3 times and that is a walk in the park compared to this pain.

The nurse practitioner used an otoscope and didn't see any inflammation around my ear drum, but it is obviously swollen in the ear canal and the nodes around the ear are enlarged and she could see I was in pain. She dx'd me with Otitis Externa. She prescribed oral amoxicillin and Ofloxacin ear drops. The office call was $40, the oral ab was free at Meijer (grocery Rx), the ab drops were $50. (for the uninsured, we like to know this kind of info ).

I'm still in horrible pain and taking 2 ibuprofen every 3-4 hours. The only relative relief I am getting is when I put the ab drops in, the cold feels somewhat good and they seem to be knocking the infection back a bit. I can sleep for a few hours, but then the pain comes back full-force. I cry and cry.

I have used ice packs, but anything near the ear is dreadful. There is a tiny short-lived relief when I hold my nose and push air out, or hold open the ear canal by pulling my lobe down. But it really seems to make it worse overall.

    I'll update again tomorrow.

I'd like to add, for the purpose of general pain relief...

A doctor once told me that if you take a Tylenol and Advil together, the Tylenol somehow increases the potency of the Advil quite a bit. I've never tried this, but it could be worth a try for those with pain and needing to avoid narcotics.

Default Update To Severe Ear Pain

Yesterday was pretty rough. My sister brought me some percocet (brother in law has a bad back or something). I took one in the afternoon and it really helped the pain. If you use a doc, I highly recommend it. I wish I would have had it for the other 2 really bad nights. I also used Hyland's Ear Ache Drops. They seem pretty benign overall but might have some pain alleviating effects. The cold hits and it shocks, but in a weird way feels good.

Last night was very bad again, though. Nighttime is the worst and there was lots of crying prior to bed time. Boo to the hooing and feeling very scared (imagination runs wild that I will lose my ear and jaw or something...). Meanwhile I took 2 percocet. And finally fell asleep about an hour later. I woke about every three hours all night and took 3 ibuprofen each time. The percocet is strong and I really don't want to take too much of it. The ibuprofen staved off the pain for the rest of the night.

I woke late this morning, took another dose of ibuprofen, put the antibiotic ear drops in (twice a day) and took the amoxicillin (twice a day).

Do I feel better? I think that I do, somewhat.

But for posterity: So far it has lasted a week. The doctor visit was on the 4th day. There have been 3 really bad days of intense pain, swelling, enlarged nodes, itching, pinching, muffling, etc... I have been on ABs for 2 days, 4 1/2 doses, .

I will get back here tomorrow to see if this appears to be the duration of it and if the worst part is over.

Default Final Thoughts On Sever Ear Infection

(That should read *severe ^up thur^)

A decent day yesterday. The swelling was still bad. There was inflammation and lots of heat, if you know what I mean. My hearing was still muffled, but the pain subsided significantly. I still skipped out of an afternoon gathering to stay home and rest.

I took a percocet before bedtime because I was scared to wake up in pain. It really alleviated any lingering discomfort I had. I did wake up in the middle of the night to some discomfort and pain, but nothing like it was. No more tears and so I decided to ride it out. I'm really tired of having chemicals coursing through my bloodstream.

This morning seems much, much better. I took my oral ab and used the ab drops and will continue them until they are gone. I'm going back to work this morning and to an afternoon meeting.

Be well. Take care. It gets better. One solid week from minor to major discomfort, and 3-4 of that is severe, unadulterated, horrible, crying, searing pain. Day 7 or 8 there is relief.

    Do not use home remedies.
Do not stick anything in your ear.
Don't waste your time researching homeopathic or natural solutions.
No garlic, no alcohol, no oil.
Go to the doc and get Rx antibiotic ear drops immediately. If you have insurance or can afford it get the expensive ones with hydrocortizone. I couldn't afford them, but wish I could have. If you have Otitis Externa, but you don't have Otitis Media, ask for oral antibiotic anyway, just to save you time so you don't have to go back in case the infection spreads to your inner ear.

This is from someone who thinks modern health care is a terrible scam, but sometimes you need them to get an Rx, unfortunately. So, do that as soon as you can. Tell them you want want percocet for the pain. Don't take no for an answer. This is one of the times I think an M.D. is the best option. And I truly hate doctors. They are generally idiots.

    Best Wishes.

Default Ear Infection. Pain is ridiculous.

    Hello Lighton,
It's 3 am on the 3rd day of very intense pain. Took two advil at 10 pm.. The pain is coming back every four hours. ear is swelled almost shut, lots of fluid in the ear, aside from the antibiotic drops. I've been taking those for 2 days now. No orals. But I have been in some painful situations, playing college football, surgeries, broken bones etc.. and this has to be some of the worst pain I have ever felt, because it does not let up! I'm over here feeling like I am being punished.. And I am feeling lonely.. So it is nice to know I am not the only one. You are saying that it will get better day 6? when will there be some relief of pain? every day gets increasingly worse. This is really f**ked. please answer back. thank you... I need some survival advice.

    hi samson..

my heart goes out to you.. ear pain and tooth pain
    can be awful..

if your ear isn't any better as day 3 goes on,
maybe? you should get back to a dr. or
one of those walk in clinics.. maybe? you
need something stronger than just drops..

    Default Day 3-4 update

Thank you. Day 3 into day 4, I felt some relief from pain. I had upgraded to Tylenol with codeine yesterday, still only gave me relief for 4 hours at a time. But I went longer without taking them. Continued to put the antibiotic drops in. Ear still swollen shut.. Can't hear, but pain down from a 10 to a 7. I am a bit worried as I feel an infection possibly starting in my other ear! So I began putting drops in the other ear today. Hopefully I caught it before it gets bad. That would really be a drag. Seeing the ENT again tomorrow to get an ear wick (cotton wick you put in your ear then put drops in and it expands and makes sure the drops get in when your ear is swollen shut). Also blow dried the infected ear today. Felt like it made a positive difference for the drops. Praying that the other ear doesn't get infected now. Thanks for reaching out. Sleep time

So I'm an 18 year old, and I'm home alone for the week. I'm watching my mom's house/ferrets/my younger brother. On Tuesday I started feeling what felt like an ear infection, something that I had before, but it was very mild and there was no pain the previous time, thank god.

Unfortunately this time there is a ton of pain and I can't sleep. I took a two hour nap this afternoon, but I stayed up all last night and the night before in pain.

I went to the Doctor's today at 7:30, he prescribed me some amoxacillion, I'm taking one (giant) pill with breakfast and one with dinner. I'm currently on day three of this pain and I'm tempted to just stab a pencil through my eardrum, but I know that wouldn't be good. I can't sleep tonight, I even tried meditating for a bit and that helped me not focus on the pain a bit, so I may just do that all night.

I took Ibuprofen and Tylenol PM earlier, about an hour or so ago, and I didn't feel any relief from the pain. I'm going to wait it out, but being able to have people listen, and know how others dealt with the situation makes me feel better.

Edit: The symptoms I've been feeling are:
    Dizzyness
    Ear pain
    Slight occasional drainage
Feeling like I need to vomit
Not being able to move my jaw without causing a lot of pain. It makes eating hard to do.

    Hey there,
I'm from the uk I'm 25 and I'm so happy to read your posts ( that sounds kinda sick lol )
I've had an ear infection since Monday I went to the doctors and they have me a spray called otomize ear spray .... By Wednesday I was sure it was getting worse! That night was the worst night ever!!! I was literally crying and shaking in pain all night! I got into the doctors again and they said it had turned into a fungal infaction? And they gave me antibiotics and locorten vioform ear drops ... Now at first I thought the drops were working but after using then last it made my ear feel like somone was pouring red hot oil down it for a whole two hours until my ear started discharging
I've decided I'm just gonna try antibiotics and painkillers and see how that goes no drops!
I've had the same thing as you guys! Feels like I've been kicked in the face, jaw unable to open, throbing, no sleep, red hot face, feeling stabbing pains and just generally feeling ????!!
My mums also scared me into thinking its an ear absess but after reading you posts I'm satisfied its an infection
I really hope this goes soon!! I'm so glad you people have said how much it hurts as my boyfriend just thinks I'm being pappy!! This is literally the worst pain I've ever felt and I've has mouth absesses, broken bones and snapped ligaments ..... I'm not normaly one to complain but Jeasus it's freaking awful!!
    Good luck everyone!!

    Default Thanks for the post

    Hi Lighton,

Thanks for the posts. I'm going through an ear infection now and it's nice to know that others have gone through the same. I saw the doctor two days ago and was prescribed some paracetamol/codeine and amoxycillin and clavulanic acid (antibiotic). Since taking the antibiotics I've had more pus-filled swellings than I did before I started the ABs and I seem to be losing control of my jaws as I can't chew normally. My right ear feels really stuffed to the point of impairing hearing, although my hearing is still good. I hope this is all normal response to the ABs.

    Thanks again

Get yourself some sweet oil...put a few (3 or 4) drops in each ear then gently stuff a cotton ball in it to hold the oil there as long as possible. It really does help.

    ~~good luck

    Default my ear hurts too

Hi guys! 1 st time i got an ear infection last week.. It started from an itchy ear till it got swollen and so is my jaw that i couldn't even open my mouth to eat properly so i go to the doctor..he said i got TMJ so he prescribed me an antibiotic called cloxacillin and another medicine called methylprednisolone..i took the antibiotics for 5 days 4x a day while the other one is for 3 days twice a day...then i got better..then after 2 days my ear caused me severe pain that i couldn't handle anymore i can't even sleep even in my dreams my ear is achin like you guys i cry in pain..cause it's like some thorns are inside my brain kickin! Like an electricity flowing from my ear to brain to neck that it hurt so bad..i keep crying that my mom brought me to the doctor again..so the doctor said my ears still haven't healed and its called otitis externa that 5 days of taking antibiotic isn't enough so he prescribed me another antibiotic that i should drink for 7 days called flucloxacillin since continuing my previous antibiotic wont take effect since i stopped for 2 days and a pain reliever called polynerv forte then an ear drop.. Thought I'd be ok when i drink it..but i woke up in pain again which is why I'm writing my experience now..it hurts so bad that like you guys i wanna bump my head on the wall..when i swallow my ear hurts from my brain to neck..it sucks having this..i can bear all pains in my life but this one i couldn't )

Last night was the worst. Double ear infection that pretty much caused severe pain throughout my entire head. No pain killers for the two days it lasted. I am writing this because the post helped me last night. The ice pack worked for me to the point I could sleep. Alternating from ear to ear. It was actually quite calming since moments prior, I was about to break down and lose it. Which raised my heart rate and caused more pain. Ice pack and a calm demeanor helped me. Both ears are swollen in the canal impairing my hearing, but I don't care since the pain is gone. The silence feels like a calm after the storm. I was ecstatic when I awoke with no pain. Sleep helped the healing process.

The same thing happened to my husband and he was given numbing drops from the ER. They worked amazing! I'd suggest calling your doctor and asking for something like this or heading to the ER.
