This is a tricyclic antidepressant, so yes, you need a prescription for it, not as heavily monitored as narcotics but you will need to see a doc to get it.

I don't understand why an Orthopedic Surgeon would prescribe this for treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease. All this **** did for me was make me sleep 13-16 hours a day![?]

DrHadjian, some of these types of drugs have been used to successfully treat chronic pain in some patients.

Here's a page with more info:

I had some minor relief from Neurontin, but nothing when they tried to add Cymbalta.

I have been taking Amitryptyline since 1972 but have not been on the same dosage during that time. I was originally put on it for severe panic attacks, haven't any since I got the Asian Flu in 1993. I was sick for around 6 weeks but after I finally got over it I didn't have anymore panic attacks. I have been taking 100 mil at bedtime for almost 2 years and that is only to help me to sleep. Sometimes it helps but sometimes it doesn't. I'm afraid that it might have damaged my liver as I had my gallbladder removed 1 week ago and prior to that I was given all kinds of tests and one showed that my liver enzimes were really high so my surgeon did a biopsy and I'm so afraid to find out what the results are. Has anyone on here who has taken Amitryptyline had any kind of liver problems?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I take 10mg for migraine prevention and it used to work but it's stopped working now. Maybe I developed a tolerance to it or something. No I've never had liver problems.
