Default alcohol during opiod detox

My husband doesn't have the painkiller pills anymore and has w/d now. Last time he got his last 10 tabs yesterday. He refused to go to the doctor to get subs and decided to do cold turkey. In order to forget his pain and get some sleep he drunk a lot of alcohol. How is it dangerous to drink right now?

i applaud his desire to quit however i dont think using alcohol to move ahead with recovery for opiates is such a great idea. again i think its great that he wants to stop using but in my experiences with using alcohol to lessen wd it has been uneffective. it may have seemed to be helpful MAYBE the first night but the first night is a cake walk compared to the next couple days. for me anyway. but sadly i must say it certainly will not get him through all the way without possibly causing harm. not to mention what is really going on and that is an attempt to be free of 'drugs' and alcohol is a drug. it could become a case of switching one substance for another. i can tell you there were times i attempted ct with alcohol as help and as the days passed being drunk while detoxing made me even more irratable and as it helped less and less i consumed more and more which lead to using again. this is my own personal experience but i hope it might shed some light on things to come on that route. getting help is the first step. trust me. i hope the best! you have come to a great forum in finding advice for help. dont stop now!

another point i might add in addition to what i already said about alcoholuse at this time. it is, for me and a score of others i know to be the true gateway drug. its legal and easy to aquire and even easier to abuse. i think getting professional help first, ie. suboxone etc. and then doing more looking around here for further help of better dosing on a more reasonable program is the way to go. good luck!

i have to agree with "already in use" usualy this would just be a drug replacement to another addictive drug. subs and possibly narcotics anonymous might be helpful if he starts drinking more during/after w/d. as for actual harm (besides alcohols natural harm) i dont think it will do anything to him physicaly if hes not taking other drugs.
