The legal status of
Soma is an odd one. You are right about it having abuse potential, yet it is not federally scheduled. It IS a schedule IV substance in many STATE drug schedules, including my home state of Arizona, since teens often aquire them legally in Mexico (where they give em out like candy) and sell them back home. A state schedule is as restrictive and legally binding as a federal schedule in that state, so I guess the reason soma is not on the federal schedule is that it isn't seen as a problem nation wide, only in a handfull of states. as more states ad Soma to their own drug schedules, it will no doubt find it's way onto the federal schedules eventually. In a related note, meprobomate, which is an active metabolite of
carisoprodol (soma) and thought to account for much of soma's thereputic/recreational value, is a federally controlled schedule IV substance. more on soma law at
