Default Need Advice on Pain Medications

Hi everyone,

currently I am taking Oxycontin 5 & 10 mgs, plus Percocet 5/325 for breakthrough pain. My question is what other narcotic pain med can I take, the Oxycontin isn't strong enough. I was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and most nights my back hurts like a ********** making sleeping next to impossible.

I haven't slept in 2 days because of the pain. Is switching narcotic pain meds a good way to prevent someone building tolerance? I just don't want to get to such a high dose of one pain med such as Oxycontin. Is MS Contin a good pain medication and is it just as strong as Oxycodone?

MS Contin is a time released medication being more like oxycontin than oxycodone. MS Contin is a good medication for most people. For what it's worth I don't think jumping around with different meds is necessary nor will it prevent you from becoming dependent on the meds. I think you've seen that drug dependency is something you're living with.

Your current oxycontin dose is as small as it can possibly be. If you are in misery I would tell the pain dr that you need some freakin medication that is going to permit you to sleep. As long as you're under his care and not abusing anything then he is supposed to treat your pain accordingly.

Doesn't really matter if you're dependent to oxycontin or ms contin. Opiate dependency is opiate dependency whether it's oxycontin or ms contin it doesn't really make any difference. Hang in there. God bless.

The first time I was prescribed Oxycontin was the 10mg dose. The first time I took it, it made me feel like a zombie. I didn't like the feeling at all, so I talked to my pain doctor, he lowered the dose to 5mg. The 5mg pill didn't hit me as hard as the 10mg. Lately I've been taking one 5mg and one 10mg at the same time to make 15mgs. That did help me for a while but now the pain is getting worse because my scoliosis is getting worse. I'm going to call my pain dr today to see if I can get in to see him.

I had scoliosis all my life and had the surgery , rods, and body cast , the whole nine yards but this was back in 1973. I had a severe curveture. I lived out a good life till the severe degenerating disc disease took over. I take 4 Gabapentins for the nerver damage due to 2 other surgeries I had in 2003 & 04 and had the 2 rods taken out and a cage put in my lower back. Im worse off now unfortunatly. I take 4, 300mg each of Gabapentins a night and what helps me sleep because I relate so well about laying, is Tizanidine 2, 4mg a night. That medication has been a dream. I can atleast sleep 5 to 6 hours but once im awaken, im up. I have a high tolerence to meds now but those pills have been a major relief in my life. Im 50 and have taken them for 3 years and havent built up any tolerence yet. Try those. I did have to build up to those meds though. I started with 2 Gabs at first and 1 Tizanidine and then to 3 Gabs and 1 1/2 with the Tizanidine...it took about 1 month untill I was able to take my full dose. Good luck...Dr's now just do not want to prescribe pain meds anymore for all the people that have literally abused the system to get high. Its ashame.
