Default Neck and Shoulder Pain, Prescrition Questions

I have a pinched nerve in my neck and am waiting for an MRI for my shoulder. The doc seems to be oblivious to the shoulder injury at this point but I can tell you I have been in an increasingly uncomfortable and painful state. The ER gave me a sling and oxycodone 5/325 about 5 days ago and that combo made me feel a bit more comfortable. I saw the Ortho (oblivious guy) 3 days ago and he tells me I have a pinched nerve and that he has to check my insurance to see if Im covered for things like MRIs and PT. He also wrote me prescriptions for Methylprednisone, a steroid to help the nerve in my neck and Hydrocodone 7.5/500 1 every 6 hours. I am still in quite a bit of pain with this Hydrocodone stuff and am very uncomfortable, sling or not, sitting or standing. It feels like someone is shoving one of those hot prodding irons into the front and back of my shoulder. I have to go all weekend until I see him for a follow up on Tuesday. Does anyone have any idea what Im dealing with? And furthermore what kind of pain medication will work best for this? thanks

I am sorry about your situation. Oxycodone is a powerful narcotic, and yes, it works well, but I am not surprised the ER gave that to u and not a regular doctor. Most reg. doctors or specialists will not prescribe oxycodone because they are very addicting, so most prescribe what u mentioned, a steroid and hydrocodone. Now, hydrocodone comes with its own addiction problems, but it is not as potent or addicting as oxycodone. That said, 7.5 is an extra strength dose. They do have 10mg dose which is the strongest, so maybe bring that up as an option if the pain is that bad and maybe getting some kind of muscle relaxer. I would say Soma, but those have a tendency to be abused with hydros, so maybe like Flexeril, which work pretty good and may help u sleep. I would ask for a med. dose adjustment and even if he/she does not raise your dose ask if u can take every 4 hours, because I know u can take 2 hydrocodones every 4 hours for ppl that are in severe pain, but that is the max dose. Of course talk to your doctor about this. I am not a doctor, but I do have a psyc. degree. If u have a really "kind" doctor, he or she may give u a moderate dose of Valium (diazepam) to help with your extra discomfort. Again, these can also be addicting, but if u are not abusing painkillers and have not had problems in the past, being on this type of stuff for short periods of time is fine. Over the long term, I don't know what to say. They will have to run more detailed testing to find out. I suffer from siactica and take Tramadol, a relatively weak pain killer in contrast to what u are taking, and I doubt those would help u, and some ppl even abuse those so just ask your specialist for more advice. Good luck!

    Question

I too have neck, shoulder and back pain. I dont know if mine is a pinched nerve but am pretty sure it is bc symptoms sound similar. I have tried Neurotin and Lyrica for nerve pain but discovered I am allergic to Neurotin. Lyrica seemed to help real well at first but eventually I required more in order for it to make me feel any difference. I have tried Cymbalta as well and am allergic to it as well. Seems like best relief I have is Hydro 10's every 6 hours, which is not soon enough but I can take 750mg. Roxy's every 4 hours and at bedtime I take 4mg. of Tizanidine with Hydro's which help me sleep.
I have a recent MRI but have not been read by anyone since Im trying to seek advice of another pain doc.

I wish u the best and I do sympathize with u since we're going thru similar hell.
