Default methergine

My daughter is 20 years old and has epilepsy. We recently found out that she was pregnant. Because she takes depakote there was a very very big possibility of her baby having spina bifida(oops! spelling
Today she went through the terrible ordeal of getting an abortion. She is disabled herself and didn't want to carry a baby that had very little chance of living, much less be healthy. One of the medications prescribed to her was mehtergine. When I looked it up I was still unsure of what this drug is being given to her for. Does anyone know why this would be given after a procedure like this.

methergine is a blood vessel constrictor used to prevent or control excessive bleeding following childbirth or abortion.
