I spent years in the insurance business as a company exec. I can tell you that if you had health insurance in force when you purchased new insurance it's against the law for them to claim "pre-existing conditions." Laws have changed in that regard to protect the consumer. If you had nothing in force then they can get away with that.
I don't know your age, health conditions, or where you live but if you want health insurance that actually pays something for dr calls, meds, etc without a huge deductible or co-pay there is no way you'll find anything for $220 a month that is worth the paper it's written on.
You can also purchase health insurance by going through the state guarantee association in the state where you reside. They can provide coverage without pre-existing condition clauses or whatever type policy you are financially able to pay for.
