Default False postive drug tests.

My daughter got a positive on a drug test (marijuana). I believe it to be a false positive caused by Naproxen, prescribed for ovarian cysts. Can anyone help me confirm that Naproxen can cause false positive drug tests?

does your daughter smoke pot? or do you just think she dosent? Try looking up the drug on the net and see what you find out i will look around and let you know.

When I was younger I failed a drug test and I told my mom that I ate a poppy seed bagel. She wanted to believe me so bad that she actually called my soccer coach and flipped out! I told her the truth 9 years later. Regardless, does she take naproxen sodium? I don't believe that naproxen has any THC in it. I would get another test done if you really believe her. I mean you can buy tests at most drug stores. I mean you don't want your daughter to think you don't believe her but before you go and flip out like my mom did (in the end she looked really dumb) I would see what your daughter says. Even call your doctor or pharmacy. They should be able to give you the break down of the medication. Good luck!

Not so clueless,

I understand what you are saying about a mother's love. But, she was with me day & night for 19 days before this drug test was taken. No one smokes in our family or home, so we would notice a hint of smoke. This has been so very upsetting and want to help her because she really has been doing all the right things for the last year. Our family likes being with her now.

Hi Nancy,
Would it be such a big deal if, in fact, she had smoked pot? If you're asking for advice, I'd just assure your daughter (as I'm sure you're doing) that you love her unconditionally, and that if she did smoke pot, it isn't the end of the world. Has she had drug issues in the past..? You say that "our family likes being with her now," which implies that the family hasn't liked being with her in the old days, perhaps when she was doing drugs? I'd like to hear more. Just fill me in; I'm curious. I have two sons, and I think if I learned they ever tried pot, I'd try to approach it even-handedly (don't most teenagers try pot? I know I did), and tell them it probably wasn't the best choice, but that I trusted and respected them, as young adults, to choose wisely. What do you think? Is your daughter a good kid, overall?

Nancy-

I hope by now that you have gotten an answer to your question. However, I would like to tell you some good news. Naproxen, as well as, Ibuprofen and ketoprofen are known to cause false positives for THC tests. I am sure you can find plenty of web sites that will tell you this and here is the reason why:

Naproxen is in a class of drugs known as propionic acid type non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. these medications are metabolized in the body by various routes, at least one at which involves a process known as carboxylation.

with Marijuana, the active agent, delta-9-tetra-hydrocannabiol (THC)is carboxylated and excreted in the urine as delta-9-tetrahydrocannibol-9-carboxylic acid.

Therefore, chemical similarities in the form of carboxylic acid groups will cause false positives. This is well documented and will occur most often in cheap drug tests.
