Default Anxiety Medication Questions

I have been having severe anxiety attacks with the generic anxiety symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, head spinning, nausea, hot flashes, shaking) I have been having more and more of these anxiety attacks lately and more constantly throughout the day.

I went to see a doctor and was prescribed .5mg of clonazepam to be taken 3x daily or as needed. The clonazepam did not help with my attacks so I went back and my doctor prescribed me 1mg of lorazepam to be taken every 6 hours or as needed. Neither one of these medications seem to be strong enough dose.

I have two questions:

1. Is it typical for people to be taking higher doses of clonazepam and lorazepam? I started just taking two of the 1mg tablets of the lorazepam as needed and that actually did help calm me down and relax.

2. Are there any other medications that people have used for anxiety/panic attacks that they felt were really helpful? I've been on a number of different non-benzo medications and those just ended up knocking me out and leaving me groggy so I was wondering what types of positive results people have had with different benzos?

**I am well aware of the addiction/dependence potentional coming from benzos and how dangerous they are so there is no need to state that if you are replying (haha i'm sorry that sounded so snobby but i just want to get straight to the question)**

I have an appointment with my doctor on Monday and was also wondering if it would be completely out of the question to request a stronger dose of the ativan (most likely seeing if i could get a prescription with 2mg tablets instead of 1mg) and would it be okay to suggest to him specifically a different medication (like if someone replies with a great option that they have used)

anyways thank you so much and i am really hoping for some quick responses!

oh man and by the way, i am a 19 year old male freshman in college and weigh around 185 lbs

There is a lot of different anxiety medicine. The ones that seem to work best to me is Xanax, or Alprazolam (generic for xanax.) Maybe give one of those a try and see how it works.

You really don't want to start taking a bunch of ativan, klonopin, xanax or any other benzos at age 19. I would try to find out what is causing the anxiety and deal with that. You're too young to be loading up on benzos.

What type of dr are you working with? Is it your family dr or a specialist? I started out like you're doing and ended up taking them for over 25 years. You don't want that trust me. Continuing to add more benzos is not the answer. I don't know your answer but I don't think benzos are it. God bless.
