    Default Anti-psychotics for anxiety?

Ive been on Zyprexa for well over a year, and while its good for my overall mood stability, it doesn nothing in the way of treating my anxiety. My doctor told me that Seroquel might work better in helping my anxiety. Ive been on many different anti-depressants in the past in hopes of helping my anxiety, but none of them have helped at all. Does anyone know if switching from Zyprexa to Seroquel would be a good idea? Or if not, is there any other anti-psychotics out there that help with anxiety?
    Thanks in advance,
    Graham

I have not personally taken zyprexa at all. I have taken seroquel though. I was taking very high doses of both xanax and klonopin for anxiety, sleep, etc. Had been on benzos for over 25 years. My dr had me to start taking seroquel during my detox process off opiates and benzos. I began on it in rehab and continued it for several months after I was discharged. I had no problems with it while using or when I opted to stop. No w/d symptoms or anything like that. I wouldn't be scared of seroquel as long as I didn't progress up to taking too high of a dose. I think it would be a decent medication to at least try and see how it works for you. It isn't addictive while all meds do have potential downsides. That's just the nature of medications.

Seroquel might work for you even if it doesn't for someone else. Using this medication for anxiety is really an off-label use. It's not specifically intended for that. It's impossible to know exactly what medication will work for you. That is why drs have to try different meds. We are all different and react differently to the exact same drugs. I am not a big fan of using psych meds for anxiety. But that is what it takes for some people. Who am I to judge??? So I don't do it if I can help it.

I might not be the best example of whether or not the seroquel would work for anxiety for you. I was taking so many benzos that I am not sure anything would have helped me at that time. The seroquel did help me with sleep. I was taking up to 200mg per night as needed. Sometimes I took less. I did manage to get a few hours sleep with the help of the seroquel but didn't personally notice help with my anxiety. Like I said I had been detoxing previously so I am sure that had at least some effect on me. Good luck to you and God bless.

Word word. I was also addicted to benzos and opiates. At the same time. And ever since I got taken off the benzos, my anxiety has been pretty bad. It sucks that I cannot help but abuse them because they really helped me. But thanks for the info. I think Im going to talk to my doctor about switching to Seroquel.

That sounds like a good option for you. I surely wouldn't go back to the benzos again as they are bad news using them for a long term. Let us know how the seroquel works for you. Good luck.

    Default antipsyhotic

    Hello,

I have finallyy come across somebody who is on antipsychotic medication. I was on seroquel for 4 to 5 years and i went through horrbile side efffedts. Yes, these medicines give anxiety. Anxiety is not to do with your mental problem and rather it is because of the drug. It especially occurs when you reduce your dosage espeically by lowering 50 percent or more than that. It has to be lowered by 25 percent or lower than that. Also it has a role on serotonin supression and serotonin deficiency causes anxiety and depression. Then hormonal imbalances and other physical problems also give anxiety
Do you know anything about overcoming side efffects of seroquel induced. It has effected my motor performance.

Are you completely off the seroquel now or still tapering down?

How long have you been off it? Just wondering if you dropped off too fast. Describe how you tapered off, how long it took and how long you have been off the seroquel.

I was expecting that you had recently stopped taking the seroquel and that perhaps you had jumped off at a high dosage. Then it would be a simple problem of adjusting the meds. Even if the dose was kind of high to stop it's been a long time. This is beyond what anyone here can advise you about I think. I would be blowing smoke if I told you that I knew what was wrong. Sorry can't help further but you need to talk to a professional about this. Probably someone other than your primary care dr. If the prescribing dr can't help then I would ask some kind of specialist perhaps an internist? Le us know what you find out. God bless.
