Antabuse (disulfiram) works by
inhibiting the enzyme
acetaldehyde dehydrogenase.
When ingested, alcohol is converted to acetaldehyde rapidly. It is acetaldehyde which causes
nausea, vomiting, flushing and palpitation.
Normally acetaldehyde is further converted to other metabolites by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, but when this enzyme is inhibited, acetaldehyde
accumulates in blood to cause the above symptoms to deter further drinking.
