    Default addicts and pain management

Can anyone help with the questions of what addicts are suppossed to do for pain management? My husband has osteoarthritis of the spine, spinal stenosis, has had 3 back surgeries, and osteoarthritis throughout his body. He has never been prescribed a narcotic pain pill that he hasn't abused.

    Thanks for the help.

Until I decided that I didn't want to live like that I abused every single medication I ever had prescribed. I knew nothing would work unless it was a narcotic. I refused to even take a medication unless it was a narcotic.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Secondary Raynaud's Phenomenon, Antiphospholipid Syndrome, had five knee operations, several other sports injury surgeries, congenital scoliosis, degenerative disc disease ... do I need to continue???

When we are addicted to RX pain meds our brain convinces us we need more meds than we really do. The pain is real, we aren't making it up, but it's the addict in us that's usually convincing us we need so many drugs. We become addicted to the meds and we go into w/d if we don't take them every four hours or so. So you never know if it's the problems you have or the addiction that is causing the pain.

It sounds like he needs to clean up, re-assess his pain and make a viable plan of action. He may need pain meds, but when he is abusing every pain med he gets then he needs to stop them at least temporarily to see what his true pain level really is. Believe it or not I was taking thirty 30mg roxicodone a day, plus 30-40 lorcets a day, 20mg of xanax and 6-8mg of klonopin each day along with 20-25 soma. All that plus other assorted garbage every day. I did that for years. Today I take nothing narcotic and use Ibuprofen for pain. It didn't happen overnight, and it was tough. But today I am about to get married at 56 years old, I have a great relationship with Jesus Christ, and my life has NEVER been anything even close to being as wonderful and peaceful as it is today. There is life after recovery. God bless.
