i've been taking 300mg of wellbutrinXL and 4mg of periactin a day and 120mg of geodon a day and i have suddenly become impotent and i have no libido and i'm wondering if it will go away with time or if i need to stop taking a certain med i thought taking wellbutrin increases libido but its gotten worse i'm thinking if i stop taking Geodon it will get better because it could be the combination. i've been on Geodon for over 2 years and i'm afraid of the long term side effects.

One of the side effects of anti-depressants/anti-psycotics like Wellbutrin is the reduction of sex drive in both men and women. For men often it is difficult to achieven/maintain an erection or achieve ejaculation. Often this will go away as your body adjusts to Wellbutrin. In some men it doesn't.

I am not sure what Periactin and Geodon are, but if they are in the same family it is likely that they would also add to this side-effect.

Before you stop taking any of these medicaitons you need to speak with your doctor. If the other 2 are in the same class of medication as Wellbutrin you can not stop these immidiately. You have to go through a proper (and long enough) tapering off period to allow your body (particularly your brain) to adjust to the reduction and eventual absence of these chemicals. The results of stopping these types of medications cold turkey can be very serious.

So before you do anything, talk with your doctor who has prescribed these medications. Don't be embarassed to discuss the sexual issues as any doctor who has prescribed these medications typically has this conversation with most of their patients.

There must be a reason your doctor has you on these medications and together you need to make the decision if some sexual problems are more important than why you are taking these medications. Perhaps your doctor will suggest something like Viagra or Ciallias while your body is adjusting to the meds and your ability to achieve an erection returns.

While sexual side effects from anti-depressants in the SSRI family are notorious for causing sexual side effects and weight gain, Wellbutrin is not one of them. Neither of these are generally side effects of Wellbutrin, which is not an SSRI. Besides that, people on Wellbutrin commonly experience weight loss and increased libido which is why many on SSRI's having weight gain or decreased libido switch over to Wellbutrin.

There are always exceptions, you can always find someone who has the opposite affects, but generally this is what more tend to experience on Wellbutrin. Talk to your psychiatrist about the other meds your are on that could be causing your loss of libido. Also, there are medications you can try that help increase libido. If the meds you are on are helping you and you don't want to change them, maybe this would be an option for you.
