Thx John for the update. Have you lost anything since? For myself, I also realize this fat has a life of its own but with tweaks to my diet, it has been much easier to maintain rather than gaining more on top of the fat I already have ownership of.

I haven't gained in about 7 months. I've lost 8-10 pounds. But I havent lost anything in about 3-4 months.

i am so glad to hear this becasue i was driving myself crazy! i am an athelete and fitness instructor and over the past 6 months i have gained approx 10-15 lbs and have not been able to take it off. i was always about 130-135 for years and now i am 140-145 and it has not moved no matter what i do. ppl told me it was becasue i turned 30 but after 2 months of consuming zero carbs and protein shakes and running 4 miles a day among other things, my weight has not budged. i have always carried it in my midsection, but my legs are larger which was never my issue. i also grew about a cup size which i dont mind, but not when it comes with all the rest! i was put on 10mg and i recently started cutting them in half to get off of them. i am more upset about the weight gain becasue i have no control, so now it really defeats the purpose of being on lexapro. i luckily live in ca where pot is legal, so im going to transition more to that vs chemical drugs. i hope to have this weight off soon so i can go back to my normal self and use about half of my closet again!

John Hopps how is the depression and anxiety going for you since you have been off lexapro for a while. I can see the weight is still an issue. I am really starting to feel the effects of being off the lex, the sadness, crying and all the other stuff is slowly creeping back into my life. On the weight side I have lost 15 pounds in 10 months, still have 11 pounds to go. Being on the lexapro was not all good either. Hopefully they can come out with something that makes you feel like a normal person not like a robot and does not make you the size of a house.

I'm using the mobile so excuse my writing. Weight wise I'm losing. Weird thing I looked slimmer but the scale didn't show it. Suddenly I dropped weight a week ago. I have lost 15 and have 20 to go.someone asked me this week if I was losing weight. Finally. As far as symptoms. I suffer from anxiety /ocd obsessive thinking not compulsions like hand washing or repetitive tasks. . No depression either. I am on 100mg of luvox per day but I take it every other day because when on it 2 years ago every day I gained .when on 50 per day I didn't gain but it didn't help like every day. It worked wonders every day .if I don't feel relief at 50 I may try taking the med 2 out of 3 days . 66 mg average per day but will not do 100 cause of def weight gain.

Yes I too suffer from anxiety/ocd obsessive thinking and depression not compulsions. I am so afraid to try anything else for fear of weight gain.I will stick it out and see what happens but if things go downhill with the depression and so forth, I guess I will have to do something. I have never heard of Luvox. Is it something new?

I've been on Lexapro for 3 years and have gained 50 pounds.
I've suffered from an eating disorder for 7 years and went from 120 pounds to 170 over the course of a year. I've never been overweight in my life and I don't understand how I gained weight when I was active in an eating disorder. If my appetite increased, I ignored it.
Today was my first day without Lexapro. I'm hoping to lose 30-40 pounds the healthy way.

I have EDNOS (Eating disorder not otherwise specified) and went from being slightly underweight to being overweight because of Lexapro.

Default i hate lexapro with a dying passion.

I went on lexapro last year november for GAD and had a pretty bad experience. I was always sleepy and tired and ended up getting the worst grades I've gotten in my life because I wanted to sleep all the time (in college). It almost takes away your motivation because all you want to do is sleep. I guess I was getting 6 hrs. of sleep but I usually don't need much more than that. I mean I was probably more relaxed. But the weight gain just stressed me out more than anything.
Along with the excessive tiredness I also put on 15 lbs. which is not a lot compared to most people I know, but I have always struggled with body image issues and my weight as a teenager. And for the first time I have all excess 'baggage' around my midsection and legs and i've put on weight on my face and don't fit into 80% of my closet. Lexapro has ruined any hint of self-esteem or confidence I've might have had.
But anyway I quit three weeks ago and definitely don't feel any of that kind of tiredness, but my appetite is stil out of control. I'm still almost always hungry and I feel like it's worse than when I was on lexapro. How long does this last?
Wow. Feels good to get this out of my system.

--Does anyone experience having to eat before bed? Last night I went to go to sleep at 11 and couldn't fall asleep until 1 (with a sleep aid) because of my hunger and i ended up having to stuff my face with literally 9 handfuls of almonds and then was only somewhat satisfied. What the hell? Is this the lexapro?

johnhopps thanks for all your postings b/c it is the most relevant to me - I want to know what to expect as far as weight loss once I quit Lexapro. Same story here - historically fit, exercise enthusiast, great metabolism my entire life, had to TRY to gain weight, and being on 10MG of Lex I gained 11 pounds in about 4 months. I am on day 10 of weaning and no weight change but I want to help others by documenting my journey. I will post again with progress if any! (and yes, all in tummy, actually ok with arms and legs and booty but want to get rid of this round fat middle - actually wondered if I might be prego!)

Lex no more. Just review all my posts . that will document my story. worst was starting Aug last year. i quit prozac after gaining 6 pounds. thought i nipped it in the but. while marathon training i gained 20 more . that's all anyone needs to know. in 9 months i lost 15 pounds still.had 17 to go. just got a setback with weight gain from a steroid called dexamethasone which im off . hopefully the loss really starts again. all from hip up. I've gone to an endocrinologist. nothing wrong . there is no medical reason for this. i went from borderline 6pack to a lard of fat on my stomach. honestly i eat better and exercise more now because of the weight gain. writing from mobile. excuse the typos

Default I am losing weight finally

I quit escitalopram at Christmas and my previous post describes how amazed i was that i could not lose the weight i had gained.

I think my liver or whatever caused the problems is functioning better now.

I took liver cleansing pills and they may have helped. I also took any herbs and spices that are supposed to cleanse the liver (e.g. turmeric, ginger, licorice root, dandelion, chicory, ...) and i really think all together these things worked.

On escitalopram, part of the problem was that i had no motivation, so i couldn't even stop myself from eating more than i should - i have gained much of that motivation back now. I have willpower again. The lack of willpower also meant i ate larger portions than i realized - i had to relearn how many calories were in the food i was eating and the amount of food i could eat.

I think my metabolism has slowly been repaired too, although it has also taken months and months. I can't eat any less than i do now and i have found that now the weight comes off from exercising more - which i couldn't do when i was on escitalopram or straight after due to the lethargy it causes.

Actually, i think the whole experience has somehow taken the edge off my anxiety - maybe my nerves were just worn out. I don't get as upset now as i did before taking the escitalopram.

If you persist with your efforts to lose weight after going off escitalopram, you will be rewarded in the end.

I'm so sorry to be reading all these stories as I feel for all of you. I however would like to give someone who may be reading about Lexapro and weight gain, a little hope. I was on Lexapro about 6 years ago, and I did not experience any weight gain. I usually remain around the same weight and if anything, I remember losing a few pounds. Probably not typical, but I did not gain the weight you all speak of. I also was not on this drug for an extended period of time, so that may be why i didn't gain. I unfortunately after years of being off it, am going back on. I'm hoping to have the same experience as last time and not gain the weight. However, if I do gain, but am not anxious, crying, or depressed...I will gladly deal w/ the weight gain as it comes for a little bit of emotional control. Good luck to all and don't give up hope!!!

I think I wouldn't stay on the stuff if it made me gain weight. Like one other lady who wrote in, he said to me that maybe if I put on a few pounds, that would be good for me. The lexapro might make me feel like I could let myself do that. I was at the time, slightly underweight.

I have been on "Meds" for oh lets see 18 years now (Wow) just did the Math, Mostly for Anxiety starting in College
Anyway, I used to maintain my weight in my 20's, well b/c I was in my 20's, well in my 30's have packed on about 40 LB's and cant drop a pound!!! Its like stuck on me (:

Anyway, talking to my psych nurse the other day about this and there comes a point, when you are on these meds for so long, your body(especially) women just start to get fat.....great right? Well, Topamax is now generic and being used "off label" to help to counter act this "gaining weight" due to lots of psych meds over the years... used in low doses and taken at night, it seems to be working, lost 2 lbs in one week!

I am only taking 25 mg's right now ( very low) but I am feeling the effects of why they call it "Dopamax"... I have had more than a few times this week, that I just could not remember the damn name of this or that

Anyway, Im giving it a try....
This is what I am currently on and works like a charm for me
    Morning-
    100 mg Zoloft
    40mg Adderall
    Night
    -25 mg Topamax
-1-2mg of Xanax as needed to help with sleep...

PHEW! I am glad I came across this forum. I was taking lexapro for two months 10mg and although it increased my mood my weight gain is crazy. I have been dieting and exercising but nothing comes off and I have gained 15 pounds especially in my stomach and love handles. I was losing my mind. Thank you guys for the info..

I am now looking good: at 5'5" with a rather muscular build, i am 62.5kg and still losing as long as i eat okay and exercise enough. Counting calories was necessary to make me realize what/how much i could eat since i had lost my sense of that partly due to the subduing effects of escitalopram. I think i had got up to 76kg in October last year, which is a weight gain i am sure never would have happened without escitalopram, as described in my first email. So it is possible to lose the weight, after you stop taking escitalopram at least. The only problem is that despite being extremely healthy in general before, now i have fatty liver, which might be genetically caused, but which might have been caused by escitalopram in conjunction with chronic over-drinking. The escitalopram detracted from my willpower with eating and drinking, so i really think it is related.

I am just under 5' and weighed 115 when I started Lexapro in 2009. Now I weigh 135 lbs. The gain has been gradual over the past three years but recently my insurance carrier moved me to the generic version, Escitalopram, and since this change I have seen a significant spike gaining nearly 12 pounds in about four months. Each day I will try eating salads and no carbs and each day I get on the scale and the weight is higher. It is very confusing and frustrating because I have never battled weight like this. Before the change to the generic I stayed in the 123 lb range and would fluctuate but always was able to get back to the norm with a few days of dieting. I will be 40 in a few weeks and so I thought it was my age but after reading the stories it seems clear that I should consider tapering off. My doctor said that I could fight with the insurance carrier to go back to lexapro due to weight gain but that does not seem worth it to me. I even had a physical and thyroid checks to see if that was the problem - but all bloodwork came back in the normal range. Thanks all for posting your stories so I can see I am not losing my mind . On another note my irritability, anger and depression were at an all time high back then due to the loss of my father, a demanding husband, a full time (very stressful job) and two children under the age of 5. As time progressed we discovered my husband had an issue with pornography and had an affair. Thank God for the lexapro during this time. He is now in a 10 step program in in recovery since June of 2010 and coincidentally on lexapro himself and has also gained weight. My job environment has improved tremendously and my children have become much more self sufficient. It is scary to come off the meds and I told my doctor that I wanted to stay on just a few weeks ago but having read the stories I think I am better equipped to handle life now and looking back - No Wonder I was Depressed and angry! I share my story because I hope that it will provide some light to those in a dark place. Ill check back in a few weeks to let everyone know how its going. Not looking forward to the "brain freezes", nausea and dizziness!

I was put on lexapro about 5 years ago and have gained a good 30 lbs. Not only did I gain weight, but my libido (what little I had) died. As of today I am starting Wellbutrin xl.

I can't believe I found this thread.... I've tried so many different anti-anxiety/depression medication I can't remember them all. Finally I had hope when I started lexapro. Started with 5mg and slowly worked up to 20mg a day. I feel so much better. No general anxiety. I still have anticipatory anxiety with certain things (Xanax helps only .5mg) does the trick. Only problem is I'm sober and have been in recovery for 10 years and the doctor prefers I stop the Xanax. I average maybe 1mg/mo. I know -like nothing. Anyway my main reason for writing is the terrible weight gain. I'm 43 and family is saying its age. I don't think so. I've always been thin. I'm 5'8" and have never been over 130. Size 2. I creeped to size 4 and am now at size 6. I'm up 12lbs after 18 months on lexapro. I'm eating healthy. Working out. Nothing helps. I've tried liquid cleansings, apple cider vinegar, no carbs, probiotics, etc. ugh it's so frustrating to have to buy new clothes. I'm tempted to start to taper off (with the help of my dr). I've also experienced night sweats and fatigue. I used to go to the gym at 6am. Now I struggle out of bed at 8:30am. I hate anxiety!!!!!!!!!

I've been taking Lexapro but my new insurance doesn't want to cover it. I've heard that Celexa is more likely to cause weight gain than Lexapro. Any advice?

i have severe anxiety and about a month ago my family doc switched my lexapro to prozac. Not a good outcome. I ended up in the ER this past weekend with a panic attack. So I have xanax and lexapro now. I read that xanax causes weight gain and I know lexapro caused a little in me. I am so stressed!

Default It IS the damn Lexapro!!

So glad I found this page. I like so many other posters her am taking Lexapro. I was on it for most of 2011, but when I started taking better care of myself and dieting and exercising- I felt like i didn't need it anymore- so I quit it. I didn't have withdrawl side effects like I did with effexor. After I quit Lexapro I lost 10-15 lbs and at the time attributed it to my diet and exercise. I got pregnant shortly after I was in the best shape of my life (January of 2012) I went back on lexapro and despite watchign what I ate, I gained far more than I had in my previous pregnancy. after giving birth I stayed on the lexapro to avoid the horrible post partum depression I had with my first. Well once things got quieter and the baby started sleeping I hit the gym hard.. I have NEVER had a problem losing weight.. I watch what I eat and everything... well then I had the ephiphany..... it's the damn Lexapro. I was on 10 mg, I took 5 for the past week and tomorrow I will take NONE. My comfortable weight is around 135.. and I have been hanging around 148 for MONTHS. It is frustrating becuase I work too hard to stay in shape. so I will post my updates.

I've taken Lexapro since March 2012. I've stopped taking it a couple of times, but quickly got back on it due to anxiety issues. However, over the past 5 months, I've gained 20 lbs! Completely unacceptable. All in the gut/thigh area as has been stated in numerous other posts here. I've been working out very hard over the last few weeks & saw little to no progress, but I'm also binge eating like crazy. I cannot get enough food. Needless to say, I'm tapering off of Lexapro starting tomorrow in hopes that Lexapro is the issue, & hoping this gut goes away by June 8th when we leave for our cruise. It's great to read the posts here & know that it is a definite possibility.

So I wound up going off of it cold turkey starting Saturday. I'm actually feeling OK -- but I was only taking the 10mg per day. I worked out both Sat & Sun and will try to work out at least 5 times this week. Will post updates.

I started taking Lexapro generic last September due to high blood pressure caused by stress from working for satan's spawn. I had always been healthy and not on any other medication. I am a runner, regular exerciser, and watch what I eat. So my doctor did not want to put me on meds for the high blood pressure. He also gave me Ativan to get through the meetings that I had to endure. So I went back to the doctor this past Monday and I've gained 20 pounds since I began this drug. Granted, there was some slacking on my part over the winter, as usual, but I've never experienced this kind of weight gain. I found this forum before my appointment with him. He said that this drug does not cause weight gain like the other anti-depressants and that's why he like to prescribe it. Meanwhile, I spoke a friend of mine that is a psychiatrist and he said that it does indeed cause weight gain.
I started South Beach diet (not as strict in phase one, with a little carbs), I've upped my running frequency and distance as well as weight lifting/core class twice a week. I've lost 2 pounds in just over 2 weeks.
My experience is just like most others here: it's mostly in my gut, love handles, but lovely back fat and larger boobs too! I had to go out and buy new bras this week. I am not a happy girl. I have been off this >>>> for about 6 weeks now. The first 3 weeks I had dizziness whenever I'd move my head, it was like my eyes would keep moving for a couple of seconds after my head stopped. Very strange, but that's gone now.
After I stopped taking the meds, I felt like my old self. I had so much more energy and more ambition. It was amazing. My blood pressure is back to normal (it helps that I have a new job!).
I won't stop with the running, since I love doing that anyway. I just can't stand this fat gut jiggling while I run. I'll keep you updated as to when the fat starts going away. For those of you that don't need to take this, I would find an alternative. I think it's very scary how these chemicals can change your whole metabolism. Had I known these side effects last fall I never would have taken it.
