Try not taking any for a week,if in a couple of days you don't have any signs of withdrawl then your probably ok.Once you start asking yourself whether or not your addicted is a good sign something is wrong.Believe me after a few years you won't get that good feeling anymore and you will have to take them just to avoid the terrible pains of withdrawl.Do your self a favor and quit taking narcotic painkillers.Good luck....Dave

What doctor prescribes Vicodin for you for such a long term basis? And for what purpose? Are you in pain or is there another reason?

Be well.

I have also been on vicodin for a long period of time....four yrs. to be exact....the only thing is I only take them as needed...I have 5 herniated disks in my back and neck.....I asked my doctor about the posibility of getting addicted to the vicodin...he told me that if you take the vicodin for the right reason and only when needed that then you wouldn't get addicted....I may take two today and one tomorrow and then none for a couple of days...I alternate with Tylenol for arthritis...it helps...I am not in as much pain as a lot of people I know that have back problems...my problem is I can't exercise as much as I need to and so have developed a ''beer belly'' but I don't drink any thing stronger than tea...any ideas how to get rid of this stomach?

First off remember there is a difference between addiction and dependence. Addiction generally results from taking a med for pleasure reasons, instead of necessity, dependence is when you are in severe pain, or have some other chronic medical condition, and can't function without the use of the meds.

Research also shows that less than 2% off chronic pain sufferers end up addicted to their pain meds, they depend on them, but don't really want to have to take them, and they don't enjoy them, so addiction rarely results. Most of these people would gladly give up the pills and walk away if it were possible.

Your best bet, before assuming an addiction problem, is to speak with your doc about your concerns, they will know best how to assess the risk and address your concerns.

My information is not guaranteed correct. I do not get them right all the time, but I do enjoy the hunt~
