My doc told me she wanted me to take Niacin 500mg, OTC
She said it would not help the bad cholesterol but it will raise the good to normal level, which is around 60 and mine was 30..
I took it and in 3 months it was right up at 60.

I just started taking Niaspan and Simvastatin about a month ago, I personally have not experienced any side effects, but I have had an experience that I can offer assistance with since taking Niaspan.
When you take it, it dilates your blood vessels just under the skin, primarily for me the one time it occurred was the upper torso and arms and it gives you a very warm flushed and prickly feeling (called Niacin Flush). My physician gave me some suggestions to help avoid this happening.

Please note, the following works for me, As a Pharmacy Technician Graduate, I must say that it may not work for everyone as far as medication times and diet, check with your physician to see if it is safe for you!!!
In my case, I was able to move my aspirin that I usually take for blood pressure problems to evening so that I don't have to take another dose or take Ibuprofen. I take the aspirin 1/2 hour before going to bed, I set a kitchen timer for 30 minutes, when that goes off, I eat some applesauce that the doctor says has pectin in it to help digest the Niaspan and then I take the Niaspan & Simvastatin. I have only had one experience in the month since I have started taking this!!
