I feel I must emphasize that I most definitely am not looking for a way to get high. I am in a great deal of pain. Enough to wake me up every night for the last 3 nights. I have tried several non narcotic meds but nothing is having any effect. I am currently trying to manage the greater part of the pain with, believe it or not,Advil. The bottle says don't take more that 3 or 4 a day but,I have to take 2 500 mg. at a time for any effect and that lasts at most, 4 hours. I wait until I absolutely cannot stand the pain before I take another set because I know eventually these pills won't have any effect at all. The only reason they are working at all is because I haven't taken them for quite a while. Any ways, my question is, why doesn't the methadone minimize or get rid of my pain? Because I have been taking it for a while? And also, what can I take? I was in so much pain before I started the advil I stole some pain meds prescribed for my dog.(they didn't work even 'tho it is Tramadol) I feel very discouraged. I would like to go to my GP and get taken seriously as well as get some relief. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. |
If the advil is working SOME when you take 1000mg that is good. Get off the OTC advil though and get the dr to RX
Ibuprofen 800mg. She won't have a problem with that I can't imagine. You can take three per day easily with no problems. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, degenerative disc disease, had five knee operations, have several moderate/severe chronic pain problems. Back when I was taking handfulls of oxy every day the ibuprofen didn't help me, but after I got clean it was amazing how much the ibuprofen helped. So its a good sign if the advil are helping.
Have they determined what is causing your pain? That would be my biggest concern.

I was asking about the cause as meds work best for specific types of problems. I was curious if your pain was due to nerve-related problems. Sounds like it's possible based on what you shared. Some people are having luck with
Lyrica and it's not a narcotic. You might ask about it if you haven't used it before.
If they know the cause of the pain how long do they expect it to last? If it's a long term issue that's one thing. If it's a short acute problem sometimes it's almost as easy to bite the bullet and deal with it if it's not going to last too long. You mentioned the advil helped some. If you were RXd the 800mg and that helped you at all, well that would seem to be better at least and tolerable perhaps for a short time. Perhaps some physical therapy would help some if you haven't been doing any?
I don't know your current methadone dose, how long you've been on it, if it's RXd for pain or if it's due to opiate addiction, etc and none of that is my business. But they are all factors that could explain the reason for the dr's attitude. Sounds like she's doing what she thinks is best. But is she a specialist of some kind or a GP?
Let us know what happens. I hope you try to make it work with the ibuprofen, perhaps some exercise/therapy, something other than narcotics. If you've got to have them so be it, just be careful. God bless.
