Default Duragesic Pain Patches

[:I]Hello, I am new here, and just discovered this site...I have been hospitalized with severe nausea and weakness, and the dr's tried to run an colonoscopy, and barium enema, and could not do either one, saying my stools were not all coming out, and after drinking all that stuff and using the bathroom day and night, one dr said these pain patches were the cause of me not emptying out good...Has anyone had this problem or severe weakness from these pain patches...I am on the 50mg....I am thinking about not using anymore..I have had 6 back surgeries, and spine deterating, and dr's say will end up in wheelchair...legs giving out, on Neurontin, Xanax, Trazodone, Percocet 5/325...also diabetic, and have had open heart surgery...stents..high blood pressure...anyone have advise on these pain patches....and there use...Thanks..

I don't know your history and I am not a doctor, but I have been on the Duregesic patch for 5 months, 25 for three months and 50 for two months and it worked well for my pain. As I am sure you already know, these pain meds/narcotics do cause constipation. Many times I couldn't go for days and days and the only way I could was to use a Fleet enema or take Dulcolax. I have had a colonoscopy and the gross stuff I had to drink cleaned me out totally, but I wasn't on pain meds at the time. That stuff has always worked for everyone I know who had a colonoscopy done. That is amazing it didn't clean you out. I see you are also on Percocet. Do you just take the percocet for breakthrough pain, or are you taking both of them together all the time? Both cause constipation.

How long have you been on either or both? Severe nausea can be a side effect of these pain meds and if you are throwing up a lot, that could make you very weak. If the patch is really helping your pain, I would want to make sure it was really the source of your problems before going off of it. If you have been on it a long time without any problems, then it probably isn't the patch causing you to throw up. That usually happens right off when you start taking pain meds.

I am so sorry for all you have been through with your back and are continuing to go through. I can't imagine being you and not being on pain meds. It sounds like you really need them just to function. What back surgeries have you had done? I had two discectomies first in the two years previous to this one, and this year I had a double fusion, L5S1 and L4L5 in Jan and a redo fusion, as one level failed, in July. I have been pain free for 5 months for the first time in almost 4 years. I don't know if you are on any back support groups, but I have found them extremely helpful. If you would like more information on them, let me know.

I hope your doctors can determine what is causing this nausea and find a way to resolve it and hopefully you won't have to give up your pain meds in order to do that. Let us know if they figure out the cause. (you aren't pregnant are you?)

Best Wishes,
Casey

Hello all,
I am a Certified Pharmacy Technician and a Health Educator. I have worked in Pharmacy since 1973 till now except from 1978 to 1986 when I taught in a Private School.
Duragesic is the brand name of Fentanyl, a POTENT narcotic analgesic with a very short duration of action. Besides pain relief, Fentanyl is often used to induce anesthesi. It can easily cause NAUSEA and it will definitely cause CONSTIPATION.
What condition are you suffering from which requires the use of the patch, Neurontin, Desyrel (trazadone) and Percocet? That is an awful lot of medication and the interactions are (theoretically) numerous.

BTW, a dose of 50mg per hour would KILL most people. The doses of DURAGESIC is given in mcg (micrograms)which is 1/1000th of a milligram.

Also, the patch is generally reserved for use in people who are tolerant to Opiates because it is such a potent drug.

Hope this helps

Of course he doesnt listen, he is in the medical field, lol. Actualy I have been lucky to find a general practitioner and a pain management docter that take the time to listen and talk to me. My general practitioner is the best docter I have been to and have given me a whole different outlook on my feelings towards them.
