I have had five knee surgeries. I know all about bad knees. Mobic is an NSAID like the 800mg Ibuprofen. The Celebrex is much more expensive if not using insurance. I don't understand however why the insurance company would approve or the dr would suggest Mobic and have any problems with Ibuprofen. 15mg Mobic is a maximum dose while you can take three of the 800 mg Ibuprofen a day. There are no less potential side effects with Mobic vs Ibuprofen that I am aware of. This sounds like its likely more of a deal with dr preference than anything else. I don't see any other reason for having you make the drug changes if you aren't having any problems with the current med. Ibuprofen is not expensive. Celebrex is and I do understand that reasoning. Good luck.

Default Arthritis survivor

I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for Searle (before they got sucked up by the mega-corp Pfizer) and promoted Arthrotec. This was a precursor to Celebrex and Vioxx. All three are NSAIDs or non-steroidal-anti-inflamattory drugs--just like ibuprofen, Advil, narproxen, or any of the many names they come by.

The concern about using NSAIDs on a chronic basis is that while they can reduce inflammation, they also reduce some 'protective stuff' in your gut. So, it was found that Celebrex and Vioxx spare the 'protective stuff'..., Arthrotec can replenish the 'protective stuff', and if I recall Mobic was just another NSAID.

Personally, I'm 47, of average weight and activity level, but have ideopathic osteroarthritis (basically means I have arthrits and they don't know why) in my hips, back, feet....I had my left hip replaced 3 years ago, and am having my right one done on 7/7 (yeh!!!) I've been on Athrotec 75mg/TID for years, and if I miss a dose...I know within 8-12 because I HURT! My point is that for me, Arthrotec is a miracle drug.

But it's not cheap. It has a quasi-generic form, diclofenac sodium--but it is NOT an equivalent--although your insurance company will tell you it is. The quasi-generic has the 'pain part', but not the 'protective part'.

I don't know if this helps at all. My suggestion is to do your research and ask questions.
