Default Wean off of Vicodin??

Hi Robert,
I've been taking Vicodin ES for at least 10 years. Up to 5 or 6 a day. Time to get off of it. If ANYONE can help me, it's you. I just got a script filled for 150. Can you give me directions to taper off? I'm mentally ready to stop taking it..TERRIFIED of the withdrawals I've heard about. I HATE taking it, but continue to do so out of pure fear. Please..I beg for your help. I have noone else to turn to. God bless and THANK YOU..Nancy

Nancy ... congratulations on your decision to stop the vics. You should be proud of yourself, I know how difficult that decision is to make. I used for over 35 years so I understand that it's like losing a dear friend after so many years. It's harder than just dealing with w/d symptoms after years of using, other things can be affected too. We are all different so just have to wait and see how you do.

Remember that you only have to do this once if you do it right. It won't be pleasant but we can certainly help you. First thing is check out the following link for the Thomas Recipe for opiate w/d. This will give you some proven things to do that will help ease your w/d symptoms. We recommend this here every day, it works. Here is the link ....

You can start the taper without the Thomas Recipe ingredients but I would get them immediately and start ASAP. It will make the taper much easier and will help immensely when you stop totally. Doing this with the Thomas Recipe should make this very tolerable as you weren't using an enormous amount of vics even though you did it a long time. Actually I commend you for keeping your consumption down to 5-6 pills each day. That's really very conservative and shows good self-control on your part. Those are personality characteristics that will help you do a taper successfully and end this nightmare NOW.

I would keep the taper very simple. Reduce your dose by 1/2 pill every three days. You should NOT have a really tough time from w/d tapering like this AND using the items recommended in the Thomas Recipe. Stay in touch each day and depending how you're doing we'll have you jump off at the right time. I personally don't think you'll need 150 Vic 7.5 ES to taper with. That will be more than enough to finish this if you go along with me.

I can't emphasize enough to get on a consistent exercise plan. You don't have to run five miles, just taking a good walk each day will help. You need to get your natural endorphine production working again. After using opiates for a decade your production has stopped almost completely. That is what the body does naturally to help us feel better when we hurt. The opiates stop that production from occurring. So the exercise will probably help you as much or more than anything you can do or take. Listen to me on this point as exercise is the best med there is for RX opiate detox I promise.

Keep us posted each day. You'll get lots of support here from the other members too. I'm here every day on and off and I'll stay with you till the end I promise. Relax and don't freak out about it, you'll do just fine. God bless.
