Default The thomas recipe

Detoxing is simple the mental insanity of staying clean is an entirely different storey. You have to focus entirely on staying clean. You have to block out the fatigue the depression anxiety attitude and the alcohol (melinda) and you will do fine. It just take's a little time. brian

Hi Brian
Is there any way you can stay away from those people,I seen my old oxy friend the other day.she looks horrible, she owns a big insurance company here
and was very well to do,but now she has run her company into the ground, it makes me very sad.so if you think they are having a better time than you.
think again, be happy we are not a part of that nightmare any more.we never have to go back.we are free...

Default sleep

Melinda
I seem to have every thing cover except sleeping, I tried the melatonin, the valerian root and green tea at night before I go to bed. But I still seem to wake up every hour, do you have any tricks up your sleeve that I may be able to try. I know it takes time, but it is driving me nuts. There must be something non narc. out there that I can try.

Brian

Hi brian ... haven't talked with you for several days. Wanted to see how you are doing and I see the sleep issues biting at your behind. I don't want to be a doomsayer buddy but if I have any issues today at all sleep would have to be at or near the top of the list.

Being totally honest about it there is at least one night a week that I don't sleep at all. I mean I lay down for 20 minutes and just get up. I can tell that I am not going to sleep so I don't push it. Last night was one of them. We are having a huge hurricane (Hurricane Ike) hitting here today and I really should have slept last night. I may be up the next couple days battling high water, winds, no electricity or whatever. But I could it see it wasn't happening for me so I just got up and stayed up. There was no sense in me fighting it. Then I usually have at least one other night every week that I might sleep only a couple hours. That is an average and sometimes it's a little worse.

I hardly ever sleep any more these days than maybe 4-5 hours total. I don't even have an alarm clock. Waking up is never a concern for me. I don't know if some of that has happened as I have gotten a little older, if it's a lingering remnant of my history of abuse, or whatever. But I know for a fact that I have never gotten back my ability to sleep like I did when I was even 40 years old. So I guess that this is probably going to be the way it is for me at least. I don't like it but I can't allow myself to become negative over it. I have received so many blessings over the years since I got clean that I can't allow myself to think about the sleep thing except at a time like this when I am talking about it for a purpose.

I also agree with Melinda about being around old friends that we may have gotten high with regularly. You know me of course that I have become a very serious Christian in my old age so that makes it lots easier for me where the partying goes. I really don't have the "want to" at all anymore. I just don't care about the partying. I think there are three beers in my refrigerator that have been there for at least two months. Not for sure. I will drink one or two beers if I decide I want to. I am not a freak about drinking a beer or anything. But it doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

I hope you are able to get past the sleep problem. I know how totally frustrating it can be. It's a drag to lay in bed tossing around and counting down the hours. It really makes a night last a long time. That is why I get up. Just wanted you to know that you are not the only one that deals with this. Stay in touch dude. God bless.

PS Have you ever tried trazadone??? Can't remember if that was in your old posts or not. It works really well and is not a narcotic.

Trazodone is a combination anti-depressant / sleep aid. It's such a mild AD that I only mention it because it is used for that sometimes. But it's primarily used as a sleep aid. The medical community has been using it in rehabs for many years helping addicts to sleep during detox. But it's not just for detox. Trazodone is probably one of the most commonly prescribed meds on the market for helping people sleep. It's not like an ambien or a benzo such as xanax. They even use it in prisons, in America at least, to put their "clients" to sleep.

You can go to the top of this page and go to the big search box. Just type in trazodone and click the drug search button. There will be four or five deals come up and just click on the first one that says MED FACTS next to Trazodone if you want to read the medical info on it. If not no big deal. Trust me it's used everywhere. Surprised you haven't ever heard of it.

You should explain to your dr that you're not sleeping well at all and tell him a freind told you about trazodone. I can't imagine any dr having a real problem with it. It's just not a medication that drs usually hesitate about writing a script for. Know that sometimes it takes a week or so before some people really get benefit from it. But it's a good non-narcotic med for sleep. It comes in lots of different doses. I would think that you probably need either 50mg or 100mg. They might start you 50mg and then up you to 100mg after a while. That is pretty common. You should try it. I bet it puts you to sleep and you like it. Good luck. Hope it works for you.

And I imagine there will be a pretty good chance I may drink all three of those Buds during the storm. I hate hurricanes.

Hi Brian ... I am in the city of Houston. I am 60 miles from my house to Galveston. The ship channel comes up through downtown though and out towards the area where I live. The storm surge will come up into Galveston Bay and then into the ship channel. So that places this area in a little extra danger as the storm surge is one of the main danger factors in a hurricane. The weather is beginning to turn on us right now. Not really bad yet but I am home and here to stay at this point unless there was an emergency with my mom. I don't think we will be facing power problems here for a while yet like late in the evening. Of course that is just my guess.

The seawall in Galveston near Houston is right at 20' high. The water there is crashing down over the top of the seawall as we speak. And the storm surge has just started in some nearby areas. Isn't really raining good yet and the water along freeways is already covering some service roads. Outlying small towns on TV a little bit ago are already showing cars with water up going in car windows just from the surge. So it's getting ready to start pretty soon. When you think about it realistically though you know every area where people live anywhere in the world has potential catastrophies be it hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, ice storms, or whatever. I think they are all pretty much equally dangerous.

The mayor of Houston just gave a speech on tv. Says that within 90 minutes we will be in full hurricane force winds. So this is it. Now we start holding on to our chairs.
