Question In Search For Answers.....

Does anyone know WHY doctors prescribe anti-depressant medication to anyone when there are real statistics that prove that within 14 months, the problem that made the person seek medical attention in the first place; will indeed become better?? Why is it that we don't encourage counseling to work through the problem MORE & prescribe LESS medication????

The original issue that led me down the anti-depressant path has been solved many years ago. However, now I'm dealing with DETOXING off the anti-depressant. Let's just say that DEALING with the original issue WOULD HAVE been easier than dealing with the DETOX now!!! Sadly, I wasn't given that as an option.

And, I truly believe that there are lots of other people who aren't given any options; either!! Those who are or have been depressed, go to a doctor; to expect some kind of relief over the situation. Sadly, you & I are sold on anti-depressants; as a solution to the problem we are having. As doctors don't seem to want to talk about WHAT the problem is: they, as a general rule; simply want to hand out medication for it!!

And yes, sometimes doctors send us to therapists; but usually we end up on the anti-depressants they prescribe as well as seeing a therapist. Also sad, is that there are tons of therapists out there who haven't had a problem in their lives & wouldn't know the first thing about helping someone who does..... my question here is..... WHY don't we REQUIRE therapists to have more training?? It's simply not good enough to try to talk with a therapist who has never had a problem in their lives & is still in training wheels, training off THE BOOK. What happens when they come accross things that aren't in the "magical book"?? Unfortunately, I've been on the other end of that situation!!!!

I have definately found that EXPERIENCE makes the therapist. The well, they have to start somewhere; sorry, just isn't good enough!! Hasn't anyone out there thought of pairing these new therapists with ones that have at least 15 years of experience as part of their education: as an internship for at least 4 years??? At the very least, this would give the new therapist some REAL INSIGHT!!!

If I had to chose a therapist again..... I'd start looking at HOW many years they've been a therapist!! Lucky for me, as of right now; I have a therapist who has years & years of experience. I'm just hoping he doesn't retire any time soon!! As I don't want to have to find another therapist. He was definately hard enough to find the first time around!!!!
