Tavee,

I tapered 5% about every 3 weeks or until i felt "normal" again so u want to stabilize before moving on til the next taper if u get any withdrawals which you'll start to feel around day 7 of the taper.
If you don't have any withdrawals which i didn't alot, sometimes i'd either jump to 10% instead of 5% OR i'd move on to the next taper after 2 weeks. Just feel it out........ I also took alot of omega 3's and a supplement called Power Barely (basically it's a multi-vitamin but has tons of Vitamin K so u may want to get vitamin K?)
I just bought some protein and cla which helps you lose the weight so i'll let you know how that goes). I wish they could just make something to get my libido back!! ug. it's been terrible!!! my poor husband is suffering but i also suffer cause of his constant pressure).

I am down to 1 mg. and i have to say it's been the only time i do feel dizzy and out of it. I wonder if it's harder to taper this low going off........or it may be cause i had a flu and never rested but i'm still functionable cause i MAKE myself go on with life and stay positive. It's great i have no one to complain to cause that way i don't focus my attention on the withdrawal.

ME TOO!!! I yell at my husband during PMS. Do you REALLY have nightsweats too? What did the gyno say about that? My gyno wanted me to take an anti-depressant during PMS week only cause i also get dizzy and anziety during the week of PMS.

GAB,

You have the right attitude, and ACCEPTING is a major breakthrough. Deep breathing is great and learning to cope with your anxiety attacks is great. I bought an on-line course and it helped alot. It taught me how to deep breathe. One thing it said which really works, is start the deep breathing, and it the breathe think of someone worse off than you. Picture them and what they'd say and how messed up they are. It works everytime!!!!!!!!! But, if you can function and it's not messing up your day, and you can sleep enough, then i'd say don't take it. There's lots of natural stuff you can take for the anxiety and don't drink coffee. I have a few sips in the morning. No caffeine. That can trigger an attack. Talk yourself through it. BTW, your libido will suffer greatly on this stuff.....

Sarita, I've been thinking about one of those online course's too. I have been practicing meditation techniques (which get rid of the tightness in my abdominal and chest area,I usually just sit with legs crossed and hands relaxed on lap and my eyes closed as I stare at my eyelids and patterns in them for about 20 min which also normalizes my breathing. Works well! I know I am still a panic attack noob (just started having them 1 month ago) but I am very determined to fight them off and acceptance was my only option as I am very adaptive to most situations, except the 1st time I had one (thought I was having a heart attack brought on by palpitations) all my heart tesets came back fine so that helps me when I have a new one now as I tell myself I am not having a heart attack! As for libido , this is unacceptable for me due to the fact that I'm a SINGLE 29 yr old man still looking for the right person and in pretty good shape to only dissapoint her or myself that would depress me!! by the way I'm on day 3 of 10 mg , still think I should let them take effect for a week or so then taper off with daily cardio exercise on my row machine!

Gab,

You must do what's best for you. Surely you are sick of the anxiety attacks but remember when you decide to get off them, you will suffer although it seems like men don't suffer as much as women..?
If you meditate, you're off to a good start. Try the thinking about someone worse off than you. That works great. Do it while the attack is coming. Have you had any side effects going on it? Mine were awful. Awful. Awful. Yoga is great. And pilates mat. That really helps alot. Yoga made me cry at first, but then it got better.

Tavee,

I thought I WAS tapering off this drug slowly, cutting back 25% each week. This is my 5th day of tapering, and have noticed nothing new. I know, you said side effects would occur around 7 or 8 days. I'm hoping I won't get any since I've been on it such a short time. Some of them sound just awful, like the "brain-zaps"...I don't think I'd like any of those! Thanks for the advice on the omega 3...I bought some today, to start taking along with my regular vitamins.

Sarita,

I don't think my doctor put me on this drug because of post-partum depression. I think it's because it's supposed to help when your hormones are all out of whack. Anytime you're pregnant, and again when you're not, your hormones fluctuate radically, and it affects your body and mind in many ways. I was shocked when I discovered I was taking an anti-depressant, because I hadn't been depressed. But this drug has really helped me a LOT, and seems to be just what I needed for a short time until my body gets back to normal, which hopefully it is by now.

Gabriel,

My doctor told me it can take up to 4 weeks for your body to realize the full effects of this drug. I don't blame you for not wanting to stay on it, but if you plan on only taking it for a week, you may never realize the full effects it can have on your body.

I don't like having to take drugs either, which is why I am tapering off after being on it only a month. I think you will be a lot better off if you are able to find other ways to cope with your panic attacks, but if not, this drug may help you for awhile. I know there are a lot of negative reports about it, which really scared me when I first read them, but there are over 13 MILLION people who are on this drug, and there are some good reports too.

Good luck to you all, and
have a BLESSED day, everyone!

Glory

Side effects for 1st 3 days- clenched jaw, dialated pupils, little insomnia but I have been getting sleep still *pretty cool dreams* , sweaty palms , abdominal tighness and chest discomfort every now and then. thats it so far!

Glory, I may stay on them I really want to try and follow this other guy's plan check it out -->
Started taking Lexapro 10 mg daily on Jan 3rd for anxiety associated with migraine headaches. After being on it for 19 days, I decided to taper myself off due to insomnia and feeling a bit "foggy" and unmotivated. Went to the pharmacy and bought a pill splitter, then kept to the following schedule:
(1) One week at 5 mg per day
(2) One week at 2.5 mg per day
(3) One week at 2.5 mg every other day.
My last dose was on Feb 7th, and it is now Feb 20th and there have not been any side-effects of withdrawal! One more important word of advice involves daily aerobic exercise. On Jan 12th, I began a daily exercise routine and have been increasing my aerobic time by 10% each week. From what I've read about exercise, it may be a wonderful prophylactic therapy for anxiety and in my case may've helped mitigate any potential withdrawal side-effects. Just wanted to make sure all readers out there knew how this plan worked for me, and believe me, I was nervous! I now am SSRI-free and keeping up my daily exercise. I've been sleeping great, feeling great, and have not had any panic attacks at all. Good luck to any of you out there that are trying to achieve the same end-result; exercise seems to help a great deal, so get on a regimen and stick with it!

I'm also going to pick this up tonight online --> http://www.selftherapy.org/home/index.php

I was on lexapro (10mg) for about a year. My PDoc and I decided that its time for me to stop taking it (i'm on a boat load of other meds). I stopped taking it cold turkey on tuesday (no warning from my PDoc - I'm going to be looking for a new PDoc monday). Today is saturday and wholly $%^*@&$, this is just horrible. The side effects started yesterday, but today they have just gone to a whole new level. I can't believe just how bad I feel now (7pm) compared to this morning (7am). Anxiety, jitters (more like the shakes), sick to my stomach - I do take klonopin for anxiety, I'm hoping it will help with this. I'm going to take 5mg of lexapro and ween myself off.

Thanks everyone - reading your stories here showed me that I am not going nuts (well, more nuts than I already am [])

Oh yah, don't forget the hot flashes, sweats

Wellbutrin XR 300mg
Lamictal 100mg
Clonazepam .5mg - as needed
Seroquel 100mg - to sleep

MARTINJ
IF U WANT TO DO IT RIGHT THEN U HAVE TO TAPER SLOWLY.
I WOULD DEFINITELY START TAPERING BY 5% OR 10% FOR 2 WEEKS EACH TIME.

THIS IS NOT GOOD WHAT U ARE FEELING. ITS BECAUSE U WENT COLD TURKEY. I DID THE SAME A YEAR AGO AND IT WAS BAD. I VE BEEN ON IT FOR 3 YRS AND I JUST STARTED TAPERING WITH THE LIQUID LEXAPRO(ASK URE DOCTOR TO PRESCRIBE IT). I AM ON 7.2 ML THIS WEEK AND SO FAR SO GOOD. IM ALSO TAKING A GNC MULTIVITAMIN AND OMEGA 3 FISH OIL TABLETS FROM WALGREENS.

DO IT RIGHT AND NOT COLD TURKEY.IT IS NOT GOOD FOR U TO QUIT LIKE THAT.

LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.

PS IF U CANT GET THE LIQUID LEXAPRO, GET A PILL CUTTER AND I CAN TELL U HOW TO TAPER SLOWER.

IT SOUNDS LIKE U ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK. U ARE GOING SLOW SO THATS GOOD.

THAT IS THE SECRET. GO REALLY SLOW!!

GOOD LUCK TO U!!

Hi Tavee

Yes, I am going back and tapering off the Lexapro. I got out my handy dandy pill cutter last night and cut up a bunch of the Lexapro pills. I went cold turkey because my PDoc didn't mention anything about tapering, and dummy me - I didn't ask him.

I don't know if everyone else does this - I have a weekly pill box. This thing is a lifesaver - I don't have to think about what meds to take everyday, I just fill it up on saturday - and I'm good to go for the week.

Also - yesterday the withdraw symptions just got worse as the day went on. I first took 1 klonopin after reading about the withdraw symptions in thie forum. About an hour or so later, I took a 2nd klonopin and it really helped with the withdraw. I have .5mg klonopin - hope this might help others.

P.S - it was GREAT to get an extra hour of sleep last night [8D]

Wellbutrin XR 300mg
Lamictal 100mg
Clonazepam .5mg - as needed
Seroquel 100mg - to sleep

HELP. It has been about 2 weeks and 2 days since I took my last Lexapro. I was on 10 m for 2 years after my husband died. I tapered off of it in a month's time. The first week I was a little dizzy. In the middle of the second week I have been crying, depressed and anxious. I can't sleep at night because I am so jittery and cannot calm myself to sleep. I feel like I am going crazy so I know this is withdrawal of some sort. My question is how long will this last and will it gradually get better just as it gradually got worse? Am I doomed to a life of insomnia, jitters, and weeping? I will never rely on a drug again to get through a difficult time. My doctor said there would be no dependency. I am so angry. So..do the withdrawal symptoms peak at some point and then start to fade away? HELP.

I have the exact same feelings you do. I have been off Lexapro for 2 weeks and 2 days. Could you tell me how you made out>

I am experiencing withdrawl and my sypmtoms are pretty severe. I am having the most problems at night. I hear and fear I'm going to see ghosts. When my baby cries I imagine the worst and then hes sitting in the floor fine. I experience manic times at night and am not sleepy at night. I know at least that they are withdrawal symptoms and can try to relax and my husband is very supportive and takes care when my fears at night are too much. I hope it eases soon but having gained 60 pounds after being on Lexapro for 19 months I have to try to lose some weight. Wish me luck!

how fast did u taper? u probably tapered fast thats why u are feeling this way.give me a breakdown on how u tapered.

u could do one of two things: either stick it out for a few months or if u have some meds left go back at a low dose and taper very very very very slowly.i can tell u how if u would like.

i have been on lex for 3 yrs and i m just tapering extremely slow. i am on 7.2 ml( i have the liquid lex). im tapering about 10% every two weeks and im taking omega3 fish oil and a multivitamin for all the withdrawals. so far so good i have no withdrawals.

hang in there it does get better.

i did the same thing u did a year ago and it was so bad; brain zaps, dizziness, irritability etc. i went off them fast thats why.

the secret is to go very slow and take those supplements i told u.

im here to help . let me know what u would like to do so i can tell u how.

SARITA

WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS SPEAK OUT TO THE PEOPLE.

MAYBE WE SHOULD LIKE CONTACT OPRAH OR SOMETHING?

PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS DRUG SPECIFICALLY AND DOCTORS NEED TO DO MORE RESEARCH ON THIS DRUG BEFORE THEY START PRESCRIBING IT.

THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT WITHDRAWALS.

IM INTERESTED!~~~ I WOULD LOVE FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS DRUG AND THINK TWICE ABOUT GOING ON IT!!

k, I'm on day 5 and feeling pretty good ,wow! One thing though I am on beer #1 and I feel it's effects differently than before the med. It hits me harder and I'm a veteran drinker ,well until my panic episode's. I'll just keep it at 2-3 beers every now and then for now. I think the anxiety that the initial doses brought on may be fading now still get tiny instance's of stabbing sensations I guess on certain nerve ending's in my body but today was a good day! I'm hoping to stay on them for 2-4 weeks then taper off *with doctors advice* I think the more water you drink a day can effect how bad the side effects are. (I drink ALOT of water a day) Maybe this is why I feel pretty good.[]

I started with 10 mg one day and then 5 mg the next for a week. Then 5 mg everyday for a week, then alternating 5 mg. and 2.5 mg for a week, then 2.5 everyday for a week then alternating 2.5 every other day for a week and then off completely. I am taking Omega 3, Protein Formula, and Cherry Calm plus multivitamin.
I will take all the suggestions you can give me.....[]

Thanks, I am working with the Road Back after being off the meds for over 2 weeks, I hate to go back on. My doctor says the meds have NO WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS PERIOD! She says it is something else...NO WAY.

This is exactly my situation. I am in the middle of the third week off and have horrible insomnia and jitters. How long "total" was it that you began to see some relief. I am going to the doctor and I know she will tell me to go back on a small dose and I do not want to start over.

Hang in there everyone. I decided to go cold turkey off of 10mg without consulting my dr, and as the symptoms got worse I refused to go back on with the thought that I just wanted to get it over with. For the first week or two, I got the brain shivers and would wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. For the first 3 weeks, I felt like I was going to cry constantly, often for no reason. And for the 3rd week or so I felt some pretty severe insomnia, also feeling like I had jolts of extra energy running through me.

Now everything is looking much better. I got on it for anxiety and so far I haven't come close to passing out yet (that's what'd happen before when I got nervous). I've also drastically changed my diet (full 3 meals per day, high protein and only complex carbs) and that helped I think. I've got plans to exercise more but of course they haven't panned out yet. Anyway, hang in there and things will look up. I highly recommend the diet...I've gained about 10 lbs in the past year but it was weight that needed to be gained (actually, when I'd feel anxious I couldn't eat, and it helped me overcome that).

For me, I'd say everything was gone within 1.5 months. Looking back I probably shouldn't have gone cold turkey, but all of the side effects really did go away I promise! I still haven't had any of them come back, nor have I had a panic attack (knock on wood). The insomnia (combined with jitters) lasted about 1.5 weeks total. I'm not sure what to do for these...a couple of times I'd get up and go to the gym but that didn't help much.

To update on everything else, I haven't lost any weight yet, but again I didn't gain much and some of it was needed. I have a roommate that competes in beauty pageants so I think I'm overly self-conscious as well. Living with a girl that has 6-pack abs will do that!

Well, I was so completely miserable and exhausted....I can't teach school like this, I went back on a smaller dose..5 mg instead of the 10 I was on. (I know, I must be weak) Now someone tell me how to wean from here with only slight side effects. I have a sick mother who I moved in with me, a son going away to college next year, total responsiblity for this house, and my husband died of cancer last year (the reason for the Lexapro to begin with). I do not have time to be up all night and feel like I am losing my mind!!!!

Thank you so much for writing right back to me and helping me through this.
I had been off Lexapro totally for 2 and a half weeks. Then I took 5 mg yesterday and I feel really dizzy..and cannot sleep. I feel like I am losing my mind. I felt wonderful on the 10 mg before but I don't want to start with that this time. I should never have gone off so fast in the first place. I feel like I really messed up my brain!
I thought it took Lexapro about 4-6 weeks to get into your system so you feel better. Will I really feel better in just a couple of days? I hope so because I am just sick of this. Do you think with all that is going on in my life maybe I should have waited awhile to do this? Help.

HELP ME

I KNOW HOW IT IS TO TEACH AND FEEL LIKE ****.
THANK GOD IM AT HOME NOW WITH MY SON THOUGH. IM A STAY AT HOME MOM NOW, BUT I HEAR YA BECAUSE I TAUGHT FOR 10 YEARS.

WELL, SINCE U TOOK THE 5 MG HOW DO U FEEL? IF U JUST STARTED TAKING IT AGAIN, U SHOULD BE FINE (AT LEAST BETTER THAN BEFORE)WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS.

I WOULD CONTINUE TAKING THE 5 MG FOR 14 DAYS ALONG WITH THE SUPPLEMENTS.THE SECRET IS TO GO VERY VERY SLOW. HANG IN THERE, I F I CAN DO IT , U CAN DO IT.

AFTER THAT U WILL GO DOWN A LITTLE MORE.
NOW IS THERE ANYWAY U CAN GET THE LIQUID LEXAPRO FROM URE DOCTOR AND TELL THEM U ARE WEANING URESELF OFF THEM?CUZ IF U CAN, U WILL THEN GO DOWN TO 4ML FOR 2 WEEKS , THEN 3ML ETC ETC.

IF U HAVE THE TABLETS, U CAN SHAVE OFF A LITTLE EVERY 2 WEEKS TILL URE DOWN. ONE WEEK, U WOULD SHAVE THE PILL ONCE AND TAKE THAT FOR 2 WEEKS, THEN SHAVE OFF TWICE AND TAKE FOR 2 WEEKS, THEN SHAVE OFF 3 TIMES TILL U ARE DOWN AT THE END. REMEMBER IT TAKES ABOUT 7-14 DAYS FOR U TO STABILIZE ON EACH DOSE.

LET ME KNOW WHAT U CAN DO AND I CAN HELP U!!

HELP ME

JUST STICK IT OUT A COUPLE OF DAYS AND SEE HOW U FEEL WITH THE 5MG.

DO U THINK MAYBE IT WAS TOO EARLY TO GET OFF THEM? IT SOUNDS LIKE U HAVE A LOT GOING ON IN URE LIFE RIGHT NOW.

URE OTHER OPTION IS (AND I KNOW U DONT WANT TO DO THIS) IS TO GO BACK ON THE 10 MG AGAIN, AND TAPER VERY SLOW LIKE I AM DOING NOW.
IM TELLING U, KNOCK ON WOOD, I HAVE NO WITHDRAWALS CUZ IM GOING VERY SLOW WITH THE LIQUID LEX, AND IM TAKING THE SUPPLEMENTS AND OMEGA3.

DO U THINK U WANT TO TRY IT THIS WAY?
LET ME KNOW.

JUST WAIT A FEW MORE DAYS AND SEE HOW U FEEL WITH THE 5MG. URE BODY IS PROBABLY TRYING TO GET USED TO IT AGAIN SINCE U WERE OFF THEM FOR 2 WEEKS. URE BODY IS CONFUSED RIGHT NOW.MY DOC HAD TOLD ME ORIGINALLY IT TAKES 7 DAYS FOR LEXAPRO TO HELP U FEEL BETTER.

HANG IN THERE.BE PATIENT. WE WILL ALL GET THRU THIS TOGETHER.
THATS WHY WE ARE HERE.

TAKE CARE
TAVEE

PS TRY TO FIND SOMETHING TO MAKE U FEEL BETTER FOR NOW. LIKE THE GYM OR YOGA.

WHAT SUPPLEMENTS ARE U TAKING RIGHT NOW?

I feel a little less dizzy now but I still have very anxious and depressed thoughts about all that is going on with my life. You may be right about the 10 mg. but I will give it until the weekend on the 5.
Did you try to go off the Lexapro too soon before? Did you go back on 10 mg.? If so, how soon did you start feeling better and how does it differ from the other time you tried to get off. The way I have been reading this is that even if you wean off very slowly there is a time when you go through this hellish time again. I guess I am just confused by all I have read and I feel weak for resorting back to being on it after 2 weeks. I feel like my brian is permanently confused. Have you ever felt that way?
I take the Road Back Global solutions supplements....the Protein formula, 1 tsp. three times a day, the cherry Body Calm every four hours and three at bedtime. Right now I am taking the 4 Omega 3 capsules in the morning and at noon..but just for three days. I alao take a multivitamin "One A Day" and a garlic pill. Right now I am on an antibiotic for bronchitis too...sheesh

help me

u should see what i am taking right now!! what a coincidence. i am on an antibiotic called augmentin and supressant for my throat cuz i have a bronchial infection too. im taking the lexapro and the vitamins. i feel like all i am doing is popping pills.

getting back to ure question, when i originally went off lexapro a year ago, i did what u did and it was too fast. i had every withdrawal u can imagine. i was dizzy, i had brain zaps, i felt like i wasnt living in reality.i was crying and i was irritable. i was off lex for 1 week and then the doc put me back on the 10 mg after this happened. i decided to stay on them cuz they made me feel better and i had a toddler to take care of. i had to be sane.
i started feeling better after about a week again.

now ive decided to taper slow. i am on 7.2 ml (liquid) and i feel fine. however i know that once i get down to 50% (5 or 4ml) im sure i will feel a little weird, but not like last year because my brain is getting used to the low dosage that i am on now.

i guess it all depends on the person. i ve been on this drug for 3 yrs.

DO NOT FEEL WEAK FOR GOING BACK ON THEM. U HAVE TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR U TO FEEL BETTER.
