Hi everyone,
I was just checking in! I have been off Lexapro for almost 5 weeks now... I think... maybe 4... anyways, the withdrawal symptoms are definetly bearable now. I still get dizzy every once in a while, mostly in the afternoons. I definetly do feel the depression coming back and the irritability... in a big way. I started taking Omega 3's and some St. Johns wort, which really seem to be helping (along with my B12 vitamins, which I believe saved me!) I don't think that I will ever go back to a prescription drug. I'm trying to handle this depression naturally. I was diagnosed about 13 years ago and have been on medication for the entire time. I've tried to get off quite a few times, but the depression always seems to win. With these new supplements and being under the care of an ND, now I'm confident that I will win this war!!

Sex drive has increased, happiness has increased (though again, not manic), and while productivity has gone up, I can't say I've been focusing on the right things. I think I simply have to get used to this extra energy and force myself to focus on the task at hand versus every other task that comes up.

I read in another post somebody was off for 4-5 weeks and the dizziness has almost subsided by then. That really tells you a lot about what these drugs do to our bodies though. I definitely don't think they're evil or bad (the drugs) simply because they helped me through some tough times, but if there is a natural way to get through it (talk therapy, more sleep, more water, more exercise, good nutrition) I think I'll be doing that from now on (if it comes back). I'm sure some cases that won't be enough, but I think many of us might do well if we exhausted all other avenues first.

Actually the whole reason I wanted to get off this was because I'm trying to get a private pilot's license, and the FAA will not grant a medical certificate (pre-requisite before solo flight) if you have been on antidepressants in the past 90 days.

I was on a couple of ssri's and tapered off of them just over 3 years ago. (I had been on them for almost 15 years). I couldn't believe the horrible side effects even tho I tapered so slowly. The effects were just what all of you have been talking about. I decided that the problem was that the antidepressants messed up my hormones horribly, and that is what I still believe. I used bioidentical progesterone cream without any paraben in it and it helped with a lot of the symptoms. Later I found and amazing product at wholeworldbotanicals.com. It is called royal maca and it helps support the entire endocrine system and it has helped me the most, altho I still used bioidentical progesterone for a while and chromium to help keep the blood sugar level. I switched to prometrium as it is a prescription bioidentical progesterone (make sure it is not the synthetic progesterone called progestin, as this will mess you up even more)cause my insurance would help pay for that. I just pricked the capsule open and put a small amount on the thin skinned areas of my body and rubbed it in. However, if I had started with the royal maca, I am not sure if I would have needed the progesterone at all. Hang in there. But this is why I refuse to let a doctor put me on another antidepressant. I have found that the maca, because it supports the entire endocrine system helps me with anxiety and depression. I also use the royal camu from whole world botanicals for anxiety and depression as well as inositol--which you can find in most health food stores. Sorry this is so long. I found this forum bc I was looking for something that talked about the side effects of lexapro as my hubby started on it about 10 weeks ago and I was wondering if some of his new symptoms were caused by it. The answer would appear to be yes. He is now wanting to get off of the lexapro.

for years, i've been trying to figure out what was causing my anxiety and more heavier sadness than a normal pms. so i decided to keep a journal and that's how i discovered my ephipheny. it was the HORMONAL IMBALANCE that was causing my problems. i only would have the anxiety around pms!!! i quickly called my gyno and told her the news. she said the alot of women have that problem and that she gives me a progesterone patch OR a very small dose of anti-depressant for that week. i know, that every month i will have dizziness, anxiety, migraines, etc.. during pms.

all this time i thought it was something more serious but it's not!!!

so, PLEASE tell me all about those supplements you are taking. i'm going to look them up and ask my doc about them..

btw, i'm down to 2 mg!!!! yeeeepieee....i'm doing great and in great spirits. i'm more alive everyday, more energy, and more sex drive... i've been losing weight( mostly cause i'm trying) but at least it's dropping this time around the waist.

first off, i just want to write that this website helped me to know i was not going crazy. i had been taking lamictal and lexapro (lamictal b/t 100mg and 200mg and lexapro between 10mg and 20mg--10mg for the past 4 months) for almost 2 years and after feeling like i had reached a plateau and deciding these meds were not doing anything anymore, i decided to stop. i have an MA in clinical psych and i know the hazards of stopping meds 'cold turkey,' but i was on remeron and serzone in the past and nothing really happened when i did.

one reason i did want to stop the meds is because no matter what, i was tired all the time and after repeating the same thing to my doctor over and over for years, he offered no solutions, except to increase my meds. i also started to experience a tingly lightheaded sensation towards the end of my workday that would subside when i came home and took the rest of my dosage. but this annoyed me because i knew the meds were the reason i was having that feeling in the first place. i guess there was some confusion because i thought i was having that feeling because the meds were in my system too much, only now realizing that my body was telling me i needed to take more.

so last friday, i stopped. and began experiencing what i could only describe as "brain zaps." i mistakenly thought it was the lamictal and after typing in "lamicatal brain zaps" on google and getting nothing, i simply typed in "brain zaps," and lo and behold--it's the lexapro. i just can't believe how many people have experienced this and described it the same way as i thought. truly.

it has now been 8 days. i feel like my brain is being shocked, the duration has changed from every minute all day to a few times an hour. but they are debilitating. and i feel helpless. i also feel this "wave" of some sort, like a tingle, but it's only on my brain and the ends of my fingertips and i've begun to feel it in my teeth. sometimes, it feels like there are hands around my brain giving it 3 good shakes every 2 minutes. there is no way to tell when it will happen, it hurts. and this site made me realize this is common.

BUT i need to know IF this will stop and how long it usually takes. this is the only major side effect i am having ( i am a little more emotional-teary-but not necessarily in a bad way) but i don't know how long i will be able to deal with this. i am taking B-12 complex, multivitamin and 3000mg Omega-3 a day and i don't know if it's just wishful thinking, but they do seem to help. in fact, the day after i started the omega-3 and B-12, the zaps subsided so significantly that i thought it would stay that way, but the next day they were back with such a vengeance and it was so disheartening, i just wanted to scream. i am also prescribed xanax and usually take an average of 1.5mg a day, but i don't know if this helps with the withdrawal in any way.

so please, can somebody please give me an estimation of how long these things will last and if fluctuations are normal..i had just assumed they would keep gradually getting better..not one day okay, one day debilitating, the next a little better...and if there is anything else i can do in the meantime to help ease the pain?

I have been taking Lexapro 10mg for about three years. Over the years I have noticed an incrase in muscle tics or involuntary muscle movements. Can anyone else relate to this particular side effect?

I'm going in to my doctor tomorrow. I'm going to bring it up with him and to see what we can do about them. They are starting to interfere with my daily activities/work. Also, before I fall asleep, I am having really bad hypnic jerks to the point where it's like something is briefly shocking my brain as I am just about to knod off. I believe they are related.

I went on Lex originally for OCD. I've combatted my OCD to where it does not interfere with my daily life and I think with my CBT that I have learned to incorporate in my life that I can make do without the medicine. I'm not sure where to start. I have already experienced the brain zaps when I forgot to take my medicine for several days in a row. It's a nuisence and a pain in the butt.

Just found this forum tonight. This has probably been discussed, but with some many pages, I couldnt possibly read through them all. If anybody has an answer it would be greatly appreciated.

I was put on Lexapro about a month ago. 5 mg a day for 5 days, then 10mg. I was put on it because I was having PVC's and after going to a cardiologist, it was determined they were just extra beats and probably caused by anxiety.

Although my anxiety has decreased and I am no longer depressed, the PVC's are still there. Less frequent no doubt, but I still get them. I want to get off the Lexapro but am very afraid of the side effects. Afraid theyre going to cause me to run to the ER like the PVCs did. Also, Im afraid with no lexapro, the PVCs will start again and I will run to the ER.

I guess my ultimate fear of course is dying. Afraid these PVCs are going to kill me. Ugh, and the lexapro helped but I dont want to be on it. I'm 24 yrs old and feel its putting a damper on my life.

Any words of wisdom?

hi aunty and everybody . was on lexopra 10mg for 1 month . stopped it very adruptly because it was worsening my depression and making suicidal as well . have been off it for 1 month now . did not taper it off at all . just did it cold turkey . had no choice because it was making feel so bad . it also suppressed my apetite , gave me migraines , extreme fatigue and severe insomnia everyday as well . still having these really severe withdrawal symptoms which includes burning sensations all over my body which is unbearable , brain and body tension , extreme fatigue ,extreme pressure in my head , headaches , dizziness , visual distrubances , aches and pains , severe agitation and anxiety , suicidal thoughts and impulses , tension , panic attacks , feelings of pure terror , mood swings , crying spells , memory loss , no apetite , insomnia , restless legs , deep depressoin , feels like my head has been kicked in , violent impulses and a really weird feeling of being completely detached from the whole world all the time . tried 5mg of lexopra to stop all these symptoms but it only made me much worse . really don't know what to do . i know that i can't ever go back on that evil stuff ever again becauase it will make feel me much more worse . feels like that i am stuck in this lexopra hell forever . the only drug that i am on now is remeron and i was put on that nearly 3 weeks ago . and that is not helping me at all either . been on remeron before and it did not work that time as well . for my depression due to my 16 years old son being killed by a train in march of this year 2006 . can't take prozac to wean myself off lexopra because i had a severe reaction to it . have been taking milk thistle for the last couple of days to get lexopra out of my system . can anyone tell me if this is any natural alternatives that i can take to calm these withdrwal symptoms down ? any suggestions welcomed . thankyou [xx(]

my drug history since my 16 years old son died in april of this year
1. starting taking zoloft 20mg and zopiclone 7.5mg and lorazepam in the middle of april . withdrew from lozepam . was okay until the zoloft and zopiclone started to interact with each other . stopped taking the zoloft very adruptly . was left on zopiclone which is a sleeping pill . was okay . i think i was put on remeron after that . still taking the zopiclone as well . stopped the zopiclone very adruptly cos it was worsened my depression . then i was on put on the horrible lexopra . it worsened my depression and made me suicdal . am now back on the remeron again . will anyone tell me these rapid cold-turkeyed withdrawals done any long lasting damage to my brain ? any answers welcomed . thankyou [xx(]

it's me again . forgot to tell you all your lovely people . i also had the jitterness and shakiness as well but that seem to of died down . last nite , the jitterness and shakiness reappeared . feels like that i got my finger stuck in a electric socket . i also had a full night of sleep on saturday nite as well . woke up on sunday morning feeling really refreshed and relaxed . seriously thought that i was out of the woods but everything came crashing around my ears yesterday , that's when the withdrawals symptoms came back again . can anyone tell me that what i am going thru is normal and that i get better ? feels like that i am in a very very dark hole with a point of no return . i just want to feel normal again . don't want to feel like my head has been kicked in anymore . plus also since stopping the horrible lexopra , my stomach has become really bloated as well . i will never ever take this **** ever again . this **** does more damage to you than good . my so called psychatrist put me on this **** and i really trusted him as well . i have tried so many different antidepressants , it is unbelievable . i am very sensitive to drugs . he does not know what else i can be put on next . been on antidepressants on and off since i was 16 . am 37 now . was on paroxtine for over 5 years . that gave me a stroke . anyway really hope all of us will get thru this hell and live happier lifes without this **** . sorry for swearing . really pissed off with these withdrawals symptoms . really thought that i was getting better at the weekend . anyway will keep you posted . bye for now [xx(]

Wow, lots of activity--

To the twitchers -- undoubtedly a serotonin issue which should go away in a few days or weeks. Check out "restless leg syndrome" and see if what you have seems similar. Sometimes they treat RLS with Lexapro.

Brain zaps also tend to resolve in 4-6 weeks. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer, depending on the person.

The easy way to get rid of them is to go back to full dose of the medication, then come off the Lexapro very slowly -- no more than 10% a week, and you should have few if any side effects.

Otherwise you risk trying to tough it out, convincing yourself you feel better, but it drags on and on.

Sexysue -- I'm really sorry for your loss. I'm glad you wrote here.

You have good reason to be down. Honestly I'm a little surprised. Seems like the doctor would've sent you to grief counseling and encouraged you to "feel" rather than "function" by taking a stupid pill.

The feelings of unreality are certainly a Lexapro trait -- I remember it well. Of course, when we're in the throes of depression, we can drift off to la-la land, too.

Rumors of lasting brain damage haven't been proven to my knowledge, so don't worry about that. But long-term DEPRESSION has many proven ill effects on your health.

Here's my VERY un-professional opinion of things that might help, so take it or leave it:

Omega-3
Multivitamin
SAMe (can't be taken with some meds, so check on that)
whole-grain, low-sugar, high fat (the good kind of fat), lots of green leafy vegetables diet
LOTS OF WATER
8 hours sleep, at night
30-min aerobic exercise plus 30 min more gentle something-or-other
Spend as much time with sane relatives as possible, if you have some
Spend as much time with close friends as possible, and when you wear them down with the same old story, find new ones
Less time at the computer or TV, more time outside
Get active in a spiritual community
Find work that matters, at least to you, even if you don't need the money
Scream, yell, break things and cry a lot
Write a letter to your son saying how much you miss him
Eat nuts
Make chocolate (organic dark) smoothies for breakfast (good with bananas)
Do nice things for people and don't tell anyone
Volunteer

That would be the Body Electric Road to Recovery (ha!), and again, I feel like I should say I really don't know much when it comes to life, much less medicine.

So maybe start with a change of scenery in the skull jockey department?

Hi-My question isn't about Lexapro withdrawal, but rather some symptoms.
I went into therapy for some personal problems and I was diagnosed with Depression with Situational Anxiety. After about a year, the issue of focus came up and I was given an ADHD test. They found that I had ADHD and I was put on Wellbutrin 10mg and Lexapro 10mg.
They worked ok together, however, the focus improved somewhat and the anxiety went down. So they switched me from Wellbutrin to Adderall XR. They ramped me from 10mg to 20 and all the way up to 40mg. It gives me dry mouth and loss of appetite (which isn't a bad thing since I need to lose weight, but I have remind myself to eat.) The only problems are that I haven't recovered the drive to get up and workout that I used to have a long time ago (this drive comes and goes in waves. I will do it for a while, then just stop) and sleeping. If I go to bed at a decent hour and not stimulate myself (email, reading, tv, websurfing, etc.) I can fall asleep. If I start doing something stimulating, then I am up all night.

Recently, I had some heavy stuff come down in my life and I didn't want to do anything. My doctor recommended that I increase my Lexapro dosage to 20mg. So far, it is helpiing me get up and face the day, but I am still very blah (partially over the depression of my situation, which I am getting therapy for) and not very motivated. Also, I am realizing that my libido is almost non-existant and when I have sexual desire, to takes me forever to ejaculate, which is extremely frustrating for both my partner and I.

I don't want to go cold turkey on the Lexapro, especially after reading these horror stories about withdrawal. Should I go back to the Wellbutrin and Lexapro mix? Or would it be possible to stay off the Lexapro for a few days before a planned sexual encounter?
Being unable to perform and please my partner only adds to my depression.
Could you recommend another SSRI that doesn't have or reduces these sexual sie effects? And what is the deal with the associated weight gain with Lexapro? Did I read that correctly?

I would like to thank everyone for their lifestories, honesty, and history. This forum has helped me tremendously. I was on Lexapro for 31/2yrs. In July I weaned off the medication, then the Hell Began!
I agree these Doctors don't mention any of the side effects. My doctor
wasn't even familiar with the withdrawls. My questions is, how much longer before the side effects are over. They had subsided after the first three weeks. But now the "brain zaps", vertigo have resurfaced with some friends, highly irritable and very angry. I'm always on edge!!! It's driving me nuts. Also, I'm very sensitive, very defensive
I want to attack everyone, verbally that is.
Can anyone give me a time frame on when the symptoms subside.

to the previous writer . we all want know how long the withdrawal symptoms lasts for . you are not the only one in this hell . was only on this terrible drug for only a month . the dose that i was on was only 10mg , a very low dose they say . had to stop it very adruptly because it was worsening my depression and making me very suicidal as well . been off this terrible drug for 37 days now and i still feel no better at all . feels like my head has been kicked in . really worried that i have seriously damaged my brain for good and that i will never get back to normal and that i will never get better at all . they say that these withdrawal symptoms could last for 4 months . so get use to it ! feeling really really bad today . woke up with all my muscles everywhere in my body tensed up and aching with burning sensations . i really thought it will get more easier by now but it's not . can't take anymore of this . something changed in me since i took that drug and i will never get it back . does anyone feel the same way as me ? For those asking how long the side effects last, I believe it is different for everyone. But, for me, it took 4-5 weeks before the dizziness went away completely. I know it is difficult. I felt so sick when I was going through this. I feel so much better now. I'm also in a much better mood and much happier than I was on Lexapro.
